Cliffs near Sainte-Adresse, gray weather W689hand painted reproduction

Under a beige gray sky, the sea fills almost the entire left half while the cliff of Sainte-Adresse rises to the right. The houses and trees of the plateau are reduced to a dark silhouette; at the foot of the slope, a few tiny figures and boats mingle with the waves. This oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm, Wildenstein 689, is kept in Ordrupgaard under number 283 WH.

Look at the work

Overcast weather erases the horizon and makes the cliff steeper

The coast forms a diagonal which starts from the lower right edge and goes up to the village. It opposes a compact volume to the great opening of the sea; the horizon, almost absorbed by the mist, extends the gray of the sky rather than closing the space.

Monet juxtaposes broken whites, cold greens and purple grays in the water. The cliff mixes brown, olive green and dark blue earth, then a few light touches mark the walls and roofs of the hamlet without detailing them.

The absence of direct sun does not impoverish the palette: it forces Monet to distinguish the sea, the sky, the sea spray and the rock by very slight changes in temperature and density.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A steeply inclined coastal diagonal

The slope leads the gaze from the nearby shore towards the constructions of the plateau. This climb tightens the composition on the right and amplifies the mobile extent of the sea on the left.

02

An almost invisible horizon

The sky and water share similar values. A few bluer horizontal lines are enough to indicate distance, while clear waves bring the eye back to the foreground.

03

Human silhouettes reduced to signs

The small figures at the foot of the cliff introduce the scale without becoming a story. Their fragility accentuates the height of the promontory and the strength of the gray weather.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only reference photograph is kept at its native definition of 2048 × 1684 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the cliff on the right edge

It should not be refocused: its asymmetrical placement creates the impression of a rib suddenly entering the field.

Color02

Preserve the cold shades of the sea

Wave whites contain green, blue and mauve. Pure white repeated evenly would remove atmospheric depth.

Matter03

Keep the village very basic

The keys of the plateau must remain integrated into the mass of the cliff; houses that are too clear would distract from the meteorological phenomenon.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Ordrupgaard preserves Les Falaises near Sainte-Adresse, gray weather, oil on canvas from approximately 1881, 60 × 73 cm, inventory 283 WH and catalog Wildenstein 689.

Location01

The coast north of Le Havre

Sainte-Adresse dominates the bay and offers Monet a motif where the height of the cliff, the marine opening and the rapid changes in weather can be observed in the same framing.

Atmosphere02

An overcast sky without clear shade

Diffuse light brings together the values of sky and water. Monet then constructs the distance by the direction of the keys and by subtle oppositions of colored grays.

Version03

Wildenstein number 689

The steep slope placed on the right, the dark village on the plateau and the gray-green sea distinguish this canvas from the other views of Sainte-Adresse.
