À propos de l’œuvre

Les Falaises à Étretat, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Étretat · 1885 -1886 · W1046

The Cliffs at Étretat W1046hand painted reproduction

The cliff of Aval and its Needle stand out in a pink and yellow light, while a flotilla of fishing boats leaves the beach. Dark sails and light reflections animate a soft, almost pearly sea. Painted in 1885 -1886, this oil on canvas measuring 66 × 81 cm is kept at the Pushkin Museum and corresponds to Wildenstein 1046.

Look at the work

The boats leave the beach under the large Aval arch

The cliff occupies the left half and extends through the arch to the Needle. The boats are divided into groups from the nearby beach to the open sea, creating several diagonals in the water.

The sky mixes cream, pink, yellow and pale purple. The cliff remains blue-green, almost against the light. On the sea, touches of white, yellow and pink surround the turquoise, brown and gray sails.

The monumentality of the cliff and the activity of the fishermen share the web: the immobile geology serves as a framework for a multitude of departures.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A recognizable arch but softened by light

The outline of the Downstream Gate remains readable, yet the values close to the sky, rock and water create an enveloping atmosphere.

02

A flotilla that builds depth

The size of the sails decreases to the right and far. Each boat becomes a spatial landmark in the bright surface of the sea.

03

An end-of-day palette

The yellows and pinks of the sky are reflected in the water, while the cliffs and sails retain colder blues.

Composition01

Preserve the silhouette of the Aval cliff

The arch and the Needle must remain distinct despite the gentle values of light.

Color02

Preserve the number and distribution of sails

They structure W1046 and should not be simplified into a few generic forms.

Matter03

Keep the pink-yellow reflections on the sea

They connect the sky in the foreground and give the painting its pearly atmosphere.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Pushkin Museum documentation identifies Les Falaises à Étretat, oil on canvas from 1885 -1886, 66 × 81 cm and Wildenstein catalog 1046.

Fishing01

A boat trip from Étretat beach

Unlike several almost deserted views of the site, W1046 retains the daily activity of the port and multiplies the sails.

Series02

One of many studies of the Normandy cliffs

Between 1883 and 1886, Monet took up the arches under different tides and lights, foreshadowing his series method.

Collection03

A work passed through the collection of Pyotr Shchukin

The painting then joins the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, where it is kept in Moscow.
