Signed and dated Claude Monet 82 lower right, this oil on canvas measuring 59.7 × 81.3 cm is kept at the Carnegie Museum of Art under number 73.3.3 and corresponds to Wildenstein 719.

Look at the work

The covered light unites the sky, the chalk, the beach and the sea with diffuse roses and blues

The rock mass rises in the right third and descends to the beach, where a thin fence indicates the path. On the left, the very low horizon and distant boats provide a vast area of sky laden with clouds.

Blue gray, cream, pink and lilac circulate from the sky to the cliff then to the pebble. The greens remain concentrated on the vegetation and the sea; a few dark lines at the top and in the fence are enough to stabilize the composition.

The covered effect does not remove color: on the contrary, it allows the same pinks, blues and whites to travel from one element to another and unify the entire coast.

A strongly off-center composition

The cliff occupies the right, leaving a much more open space on the left. This measured imbalance relates the gravity of the rock to the light extent of the sky.

Clouds constructed by visible matter

The whites are neither flat nor uniform. They wrap around with blues, yellows and grays, creating a moving sky that responds to the touches of the pebble.

The eastern end of Pourville beach

The site is near Dieppe, but the view is taken in Pourville. The cliff, fence and beach curve precisely distinguish W719 from neighboring views.

Composition01

Keep the cliff clear without whitening it

Its chalk contains pink, blue, orange and purple. A uniform white would cause strata, shadows and the presence of relief to be lost.

Color02

Preserve the fence as a light sign

Its features remain fine and partially absorbed by vegetation. Reinforcing them would give too much importance to this secondary element.

Matter03

Keep boats tiny

Small sails on the left measure maritime opening. They must not become detailed subjects or compete with the cliff.
