Look at the work

The house blends into a Mediterranean orchard

The facade occupies a discreet strip in the middle of the painting. A large central palm tree extends well beyond the roof and connects the garden to the sky; other palm fronds frame the scene on the left and right. The lawn opens up a quiet area in front of the tighter vegetation, which prevents the composition from becoming confusing.

Reds and yellows punctuate the citrus fruits and flowers around the house. They stand out against deep greens, but Monet repeats them in the tiles and trunks to unify the scene. The sky, made of milky blue and pink clouds, diffuses a light which softens the contours.

W874 does not present an isolated farm in the landscape: the architecture, the palm trees and the orchard make up the same luminous organism.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A farm transformed by the climate

The building remains modest, almost absorbed by plants. Its long red roof, however, gives a stable horizontal line, against which the central palm tree and foliage can unfold.

02

A painting purchased directly from Monet

Durand-Ruel acquired the work from the artist in June 1884 and kept it in stock until 1943. The Joslyn Art Museum purchased it that year through Harold Woodbury Parsons.

03

A work exhibited since 1886

The painting appears at the third XX exhibition in Brussels then at The Impressionists of Paris in New York in 1886. It thus belongs to the first international reception of Monet's Mediterranean landscapes.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the official digitization of the Joslyn Art Museum, converted into a real WebP of 2,000 × 1,569 px at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A house present without being rigid

The facade and roof are made of small colored touches, without dry architectural lines. The reproduction must preserve their readability while allowing them to mingle with the foliage.

Color02

Warm accents distributed everywhere

Reds, oranges and yellows appear in fruits, flowers, tiles and trunks. Their repetition leads the eye around the canvas and balances the large green masses.

Matter03

A pearly sky behind the palm fronds

Light blue contains warm pinks and grays. The thin branches should stand out without a black outline, thanks to variations in value and a light touch.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Joslyn Art Museum documents an oil on canvas from 1884, 74 × 92.4 cm, inventory 1943.39; his bibliography identifies him as Wildenstein 874.

Collection01

Joslyn Art Museum, 1943.39

The work belongs to the European collection of the Omaha Museum and is currently reported as on display.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel, 1884 -1943

The merchant bought the canvas from the painter and kept it for almost sixty years. This continuous provenance directly links Bordighera's creation to his entry into the museum.

Catalog03

Wildenstein 874

The number appears in the scientific bibliography of the Joslyn notice. He distinguishes this farm from W865, the Moreno Garden, and other landscapes painted during the same stay.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The warmth of the orchard is suitable for a bright dining room, living room or house. A cream wall, rattan, olive green linen and a few terracotta touches extend its Mediterranean character.
