Peasant girl cooking, F176Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Sitting in front of a very low fireplace, a peasant woman watches over a frying pan above the flames. The black kettle, the pitcher, the bowl and the scattered potatoes make this small interior a concrete picture of domestic work in Nuenen.

Look at the work

The leaning body of the cooker leads directly towards the fire

The woman sits in profile on a bench. His left hand holds the long handle of the pan while the other goes up towards his face; the curve of her back and the blue folds of her skirt frame this attentive gesture.

The hearth occupies the lower left quarter. Around it, the hanging kettle, the pitcher, the white bowl and a few potatoes form an arc of objects that describes the cramped space without resorting to a detailed perspective.

Peasant Cooking F176/JH799 is a 44.1 × 38.1 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in June 1885. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves it under the 1984.393 inventory.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The dark palette of the Dutch period is crossed by three colored foci: the orange of the flames, the blue-green of the dress and the yellow of the wall.

01

Arm diagonal concentrates action

It goes down from the face towards the pan and ends in a fire. This simple movement is enough to make people understand cooking despite the general immobility.

02

Objects construct the foreground

The pitcher and light bowl stand out against the brown floor. The black kettle responds to the dark cap and balances the body placed on the right.

03

The light comes from the fireplace

Yellows and oranges strengthen near flames, then go out in browns and greens. The interior appears smoky rather than evenly lit.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Met Notice sets the format, 1984.393 inventory, and context of Nuenen, shortly after the Potato Eaters' completion.

Context

A scene painted after The Potato Eaters

The Met places the work in the late spring of 1885, when Van Gogh deepened his peasant scenes and interiors into a deliberately dark range.

Matter

Colors compared to earth and smoke

The painter then looks for tones that evoke rural life without softening it: browns, deep greens, dirty yellows and bursts of fire give the painting its density.

Collection

A donation entered into the Met in 1984

Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Hays donated the painting to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1984. It has been in the inventory since 1984.393.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the woman's sitting position, the gesture towards the pan, the orange light, the black kettle, the blue-green folds of the dress and the objects scattered on the floor.

  • The face tilted under the dark headdress
  • The long handle connecting the hand to the pan
  • The orange flames on the left side
  • The kettle hanging above the fireplace
  • The pitcher and the little white bowl in the foreground
