À propos de l’œuvre
Une paire de chaussures, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · 1886 · Paris
A pair of shoes, F332aReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two worn work shoes rest on an ocher floor in front of an almost black green background; one shows its gaping opening, the other its distorted profile, while the red signature "Vincent" appears in the upper left corner.
Look at the work
Two modest objects treated like a portrait
The left shoe advances towards the viewer, laces undone and very dark tip. Its companion is turned aside: the brown leather, the seams and the studded sole can be read with small, lighter touches.
The background does not describe any workshop. An inclined ocher band is enough to place the shoes, while the upper black green tightens the light on their dented volumes.
Christie's dates this 37.5 × 46 cm oil on canvas from 1886 in Paris. Signed "Vincent" at the top left, it bears the references F332a and JH1233 and is in a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The pattern belongs to a Parisian series dedicated to work shoes, but this version is distinguished by its square ends, its very dark background and its red signature.
Leather is constructed in layers
Brown, green and black overlap without uniform outline. The highlights on the eyelets, laces and nails bring out the two shapes of darkness.
Two complementary positions
The front shoe blocks the foreground, while the profile shoe opens diagonally to the right. Together, they show wear from multiple angles.
Voluntary austerity
The narrow range and the absence of accessories focus the eye on the material. Van Gogh gives these ordinary objects an almost human presence.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Christie's notice documents the technique, dimensions, first provenance and even previous composition discovered beneath the painting.
The critic Albert Aurier
G. Albert Aurier acquired the work directly from Van Gogh. In 1890 he published one of the first major texts devoted to the painter.
An earlier floral still life
Examinations revealed under the shoes a composition of flowers on a gridded surface, a sign of the reuse of an already painted canvas.
Five shoe paintings
This pair with short sides and square ends appears at the beginning of a group executed between the end of 1886 and the following spring.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy should make the leather feel worn, uneven laces and nails without excessively lightening the black green background or smoothing out impasto.
- The red signature "Vincent"
- The open shoe seen from the front
- The brown profile of the second shoe
- Clear laces and eyelets
- The separation between ocher soil and black green background
