À propos de l’œuvre
Coin de jardin avec papillons, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · May -June 1887 · Public gardens of Asnières, near Paris
Garden corner with butterflies, F460Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A flowerbed seen up close becomes a network of blades of grass, pink flowers and white or red butterflies, with no horizon to distract the eye.
Look at the work
Nature observed as a living surface
Van Gogh places the viewer almost at ground level in a public garden in Asnières. Instead of ordering the landscape around a sky and a horizon, it fills the canvas with vegetation: the tufts radiate, a pink massif crosses the center and six butterflies appear between the leaves.
The keys change direction with each element. They become long and curved in the grass, short and tight in the flower bed, then light around the wings. This vocabulary of lines, nourished by impressionism, the neo-impressionism and Japanese prints, announces the more intense workmanship of the following years.
The subject fits in a corner of the garden, but the proximity, the cut framing and the variety of the touch transform this fragment into a complete landscape.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This painting is not limited to a dominant green: its richness comes from carefully differentiated directions, thicknesses and colors.
Framing without sky
The canvas is entirely occupied by the ground and vegetation. The clumps cut by the edges mentally extend the garden beyond the frame.
Six moving accents
Butterflies are tiny but essential: their whites, yellows and reds punctuate the green and guide the gaze from one group of grasses to another.
Oriented keys
The lines follow the growth of the leaves, the curve of the tufts and the outline of the flowers. Their direction builds volumes without traditional modeling.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F460/JH1676 corresponds to the work today dated from the Parisian period, distinct from the Two White Butterflies F402 painted in Arles in 1889.
F460 · JH1676
Old catalogs placed the canvas in Arles in 1889; the study of materials by the Van Gogh Museum now supports a Parisian execution in 1887.
Asnières
Van Gogh worked in the public gardens of Asnières, northwest of Paris, where he experimented with a clear palette and close framing.
Private collection
Long kept by the artist's family and then in several private collections, the painting was sold at Christie's in May 2024.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
Reproduction must make you feel the profusion without transforming the garden into a confused pattern: each family of keys has its direction and density.
- Close framing that completely eliminates the sky
- The six white, yellow and red butterflies
- The central massif of small pink flowers
- Fanned tufts of grass
- Contrasts of green, blue, pink and cream

In your interior
A vibrant garden for a light or colorful wall
The horizontal format and the framing without horizon bring an almost textile presence. Deep greens, pinks and whites work well in a living room, bedroom or office combined with natural wood.
