Stranded fishing boats occupy Étretat beach while the cliff and the Porte d'Aval close the shore on the left. This oil on canvas of 73.5 × 100.5 cm, painted during the Norman campaign of 1883 -1884, is kept at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Cologne under the number WRM 3120.

Colorful boats measure the scale of the cliff

In the foreground, the dark hulls, folded sails and apparatus form a succession of triangles and diagonals. Their very concrete presence contrasts with the lighter cliff, whose natural arch appears in the distance through an atmosphere charged with humidity.

The sea does not form a uniform band. Horizontal touches of blue, gray, green, white and purple move the waves towards the beach. In the stone, chalky yellows, pinks and blues reflect changes in light rather than a fixed local color.

W822 brings together two essential topics of Étretat: the work of fishermen at the water's edge and the spectacular architecture of a coast transformed by light.

The format of 73.5 × 100.5 cm, the WRM 3120 inventory and the Wildenstein 822 reference identify the canvas preserved in Cologne. The dating carried out in 1884 links it to the work begun on the coast at the end of 1883.

The cliff combines cream and ocher tones with blues and mauves. Reproduction that is too beige would remove humidity from the air and colored continuity between the rock, sea and sky.

A touch adapted to each material

The boats receive firmer accents, the water receives horizontal lines and the cliff receives fragmented touches. This variation in gesture separates the wood, the wave and the chalk without hardening the contours.

The boats were brought back to the beach after fishing. Monet uses their dark and colorful silhouettes to punctuate the foreground in front of the immense light wall.
