A frame hidden in the mist
The bridge, quay and horizon produce horizontal lines; towers, chimneys and piles oppose them with verticals. This structure prevents gray tones from becoming undecided.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · London in the fog around 1871 · National Gallery
Westminster appears behind a pinkish-gray mist, on the other side of a Thames streaked with reflections. The bridge cuts the horizon, the towers of Parliament emerge like a storybook silhouette and a wooden pier advances from the right. Monet thus brings together a modern city, a river of work and a light capable of softening all architecture.

Look at the work
The silhouette of the Palace of Westminster occupies the center, but it never stands out clearly from the sky. Monet slightly enlarges his towers and simplifies his details to make a vertical landmark. To the left, the lower building of St. Thomas Hospital closes the bank; in the distance, Westminster Bridge establishes a long, almost continuous horizontal line.
In the foreground, water is more material than the sky. Small touches of blue, brown, gray and cream describe the waves and discontinuous reflections. Steam tugs progress near the bridge while, on the right, the piles and sleepers of the pier form a dark and stable framework.
The city is not erased by fog: its horizontals and verticals remain strong enough to organize the entire atmosphere.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The bridge, quay and horizon produce horizontal lines; towers, chimneys and piles oppose them with verticals. This structure prevents gray tones from becoming undecided.
The sky is rubbed by long flexible passages which superimpose light and steam. The water receives broken, shorter and contrasting touches, capable of reflecting the lapping.
The browns and blacks of the pier advance towards the viewer. Roses, blue grays and pale yellows move the Parliament away and give the fog its width.
Reference image
The unique reference corresponds to the National Gallery's NG6399 inventory. The public domain file measures 3,000 × 1,929 px; it is kept at its native definition, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.
The towers extend beyond the bridge but remain enveloped by the sky. Their irregular outline must remain readable without becoming a hard cut.
London's pollution and humidity do not form a monochrome veil. A pink light heats the sky, while the water mixes cold blues, cream and browns.
Oblique beams and vertical piles are the darkest accents of the canvas. They give a firm foreground facing the dissolved architecture.
Documented benchmarks
The National Gallery keeps this 47 × 73 cm oil on canvas under inventory NG6399; the catalog raisonné identifies it as Wildenstein 166.
Arriving in September 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, Monet remained in the British capital until May 1871. He painted five urban views there, including this single representation of Parliament during this first stay.
Parliament had just been completed, Westminster Bridge had been rebuilt in 1862 and the Victoria Embankment was new. Saint-Thomas Hospital, visible on the left, would open in the summer of 1871.
The painting passed through the merchant Arthur Tooth, who sold it in 1936 to JJ Astor. Having become Lord Astor of Hever, he bequeathed it to the National Gallery in 1971.

Presentation in your interior
Its panoramic format and pinkish grays are suitable for a living room, office or bedroom with natural materials. A soft black, smoked oak or patinated silver frame supports the pier without hardening the atmosphere.
