Look at the work

A surface of water that has become a complete landscape

Water lilies are divided into unequal groups, more numerous towards the edges and more spaced in the center. Their size varies slightly, which maintains a depth without constructed perspective. The almost square format accentuates the impression of a fragment taken from a continuous pool.

Under the leaves, the water changes from blue to mauve, green and pink. Vertical lines suggest reflected trees, while small horizontal touches mark surface vibrations. Monet thus superimposes several readings of the same plane.

In W1666, the pool is no longer the mirror of the landscape: it itself becomes a world of color, depth and light.

Monet expanded his water garden at the beginning of the century. In 1904, he tightened his framing on the surface itself, removing bridge and bank to explore reflections and floating plants.

Vertical reflections, impasto flowers

The fine, descending passages construct the reflections; the flowers receive a denser material. This contrast gives the sensation of a surface that is both liquid and tactile.
