Claude Monet · 1917 -1919 · private collection · W1897
A pink and light blue gap crosses the pool between two almost black masses of vegetation. On the left, red flowers punctuate yellow-green leaves; on the right, a few pink water lilies float in front of a very dense vertical reflection. This large two-meter canvas thus opposes a moving central light to deep aquatic banks.

Look at the work
The composition shows neither sky nor shore. The leaves mainly cover the sides, with maximum density in the lower left quarter and around the dark reflection on the right. The center remains more open: pale pink, cobalt blue, mauve and orange passages describe the water without drawing a traditional perspective.
The flowers are not distributed regularly. A bright red group enlivens the upper left, a few pink corollas stand out near the right edge, then small isolated accents descend towards the foreground. The signature, worn at the bottom right, remains taken in the brown-green tones of the border.
Depth arises less from an absent horizon than from the alternation between clear water, thick leaves and almost opaque vertical reflections.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The central passage is neither a river nor a path. Its pink, blue and orange curves constantly change width and must remain mixed with the leaves which interrupt them.
On the left, the dark mass is fragmented by yellow leaves and red flowers. On the right, it takes the form of a continuous vertical reflection, crossed by emerald green and blue.
The large leaves in the foreground have brown edges and yellow-green centers. Higher up, the shapes are reduced to quick touches, which is enough to create distance on a surface without horizons.
Details and visual documents
The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The Sotheby's catalog view measures 2000 × 1027 px. The two details of 950 × 900 px are native cropping of this photograph, without artificial enlargement. All three files were converted and controlled as real WebPs.
Documented benchmarks
These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.
Sotheby's dates the work from 1917 -1919, specifies that it is painted in oil on canvas and that it bears a Claude Monet signature at the bottom right. It is reproduced under number 1897 in the 1985 and 1996 editions of the catalog raisonné.
Remaining in Giverny with Michel Monet, the painting passed through the Maeght Gallery then Sam Salz in 1965. It then belonged in particular to the Matthaei, the Fran & Ray Stark Foundation and a New York collection which acquired it around 2006.
The work was shown at the Metropolitan Museum in 1966 and 1968, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991, then in Monet: The Late Years in Fort Worth and San Francisco in 2019. It was reported on loan to the Kimbell from 2019.
