On the left, the blues become deep; in the center, bright green water opens under reflections of lavender clouds; on the right, red and green vegetation gradually absorbs the sky. The actual photograph of MoMA restores the sequence of the whole.

Look at the work

Three panels take the eye from blue shadow to red and green vegetation

The left panel is the darkest. Deep blues and almost black greens surround small water lily leaves, then the light increases as the gaze reaches the central panel. There, the cloud reflections take on cream, pink and lavender tones above a turquoise blue area.

In the right panel, the vegetation thickens. The red, orange and green touches descend from the upper edge and mix with the floating leaves. The connections between the three canvases remain perceptible, but the shapes and colors pass through them and require continuous reading.

The absence of horizon transforms the triptych into an environment: we no longer look at the pool from the outside, we move visually inside its reflections.

A gradual transition between three climates

Each panel has its dominant, but none should appear isolated. The blues of the first return to the center and the yellows of the center announce the red-green of the last.

Reflections of clouds without visible sky

The cream and lavender areas are reflections placed on the water. Their material must remain linked to the leaves and horizontal touches so as not to create a separate sky.

A surface on the threshold of abstraction

Broad gestures can be read as water, plants or pure paint. Faithful reproduction retains this ambiguity and avoids inventing contours around each water lily.

The triptych is an oil on canvas composed of three panels. Each measures 200 × 424.8 cm; the whole reaches 200 × 1,276 cm and corresponds to numbers 1972, 1973 and 1974 of the catalog raisonné.

A project taken up in 1914 and worked until 1926

MoMA connects the whole thing to the forty or so large panels that Monet produced and reworked during the last twelve years of his life. The new Giverny workshop allowed him to tackle these formats that were impossible to easily move in front of the pool.

Provenance03

From Giverny's workshop to MoMA in 1959

The whole remained with Monet, then passed to his son Michel in 1926. It was sold to Katia Granoff in 1956 and acquired by MoMA in 1959 thanks to Mrs. Simon Guggenheim Fund. It is now presented in gallery 515.
