A blue-green footbridge crosses the water garden like a flexible arch. Above, the willows and flowerbeds meet in a luminous curtain; below, the pink and white water lilies unfold in layers between the reflections. In this almost square version from 1899, Monet balances the structure of the bridge and the colorful instability of the surface.

Look at the work

The bridge divides the canvas between a vertical garden and water built in strata

The walkway climbs from both edges and places its highest point slightly to the right of center. Its uprights are never a single color: lavender blue, sea green and light gray alternate with a darker shadow under the apron. On the left, the willow branches fall in long vertical marks; on the right, the foliage fragments into small cream, green and blue touches.

In the pond, the flowers form three successive zones. A first tight strip slides just under the bridge, a second crosses the center, then a few wider water lilies advance into the foreground. The vertical reflections of the trees cut these floral horizontals. The gaze thus oscillates between the depth of the garden and the flat surface of the canvas.

Green harmony does not come from a uniform dominant color, but from the way blues, yellows, pinks and greens respond to each other without breaking the unity of the garden.

An off-center arch that remains light

The curve of the bridge must retain its variations in width and its blue-purple passages. A line that is too clear or too white would harden this structure that Monet deliberately mixes with the foliage.

Plant verticals opposite horizontal flowers

The long fallout of the willow and its reflections cross the water lily sheets. This opposition of directions organizes depth without resorting to a drawn perspective.

A red signature integrated into the foreground

The red-brown of the signature and date, in the lower right corner, responds to the small pink flowers. It must remain present without becoming more contrasted than floral accents.

1899 series02

Twelve views from the same point in the garden

Monet devoted the summer of 1899 to a first suite built around the Giverny footbridge. From one canvas to another, the same pattern changes with light, the density of the foliage and the distribution of water lilies.

Provenance03

From Durand-Ruel to the legacy of Isaac de Camondo

Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in November 1900, then Isaac de Camondo acquired it the next day. His legacy to the State in 1911 led the work to national collections before its entry into the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
