Look at the work

The modern port almost disappears in its own atmosphere

The lower half is filled with boats seen at different distances. The dark barges in the foreground, some loaded with green goods, serve as support for a multitude of small hulls. The silhouettes overlap, but intervals of luminous water maintain the readability of the pool.

The Custom House occupies the right bank with its long, light facade, while London Bridge appears in the distance. Chimneys, masts and smoke connect the city to the sky. The buildings do not have rigid contours: they are built by superpositions of grays, mauves and blues, as if the humid air constantly modified the distance.

London is not a monumental setting here: the city, the boats, the steam and the sky belong to the same luminous material.

A very populated but hierarchical scene

The large nearby barges are dark and crisp; central boats become smaller; distant buildings lose their contrasts. This graduation orders activity.

The Custom House as a landmark

Its light facade stabilizes the right of the composition. It responds to the bright sky while precisely situating the viewpoint in the Pool of London.

Smoke mixed with clouds

The plume of the right chimney joins the grays of the sky. Monet thus removes the border between industrial phenomenon and atmospheric phenomenon.

The unique reference comes from the official file placed in the public domain by Amgueddfa Cymru. The original 4,000 px was reduced to 3,000 × 1,946 px, without oversampling, then converted to WebP to preserve the detail of the boats and the subtlety of the grays.

Monet took refuge in London in 1870 -1871

The Franco-Prussian War led Monet to London. The Thames offers him a landscape that is both maritime, urban and industrial, close to his ancient interest in ports.

The museum notice identifies the long facade of the Custom House on the right and London Bridge in the background, giving the view a precise location.

Collection03

Acquired September 1, 1980

The National Museum Wales purchased the work in 1980. Today it bears the inventory NMW A 2486 and is not permanently exhibited.
