A modeled bridge without contour lines
The arch combines lavender blue, cool green, gray white and some purple shadows. Preserving these passages avoids transforming the footbridge into a uniform decorative element.

Claude Monet · Giverny, 1899 · Musée d'Orsay · RF 2004
The footbridge crosses the vegetation like a lavender blue ribbon, then its arch opens up a narrow view of the pool. The pink, white and yellow flowers repeat up to the lower edge, cut by the vertical reflections of the willows. In this almost square canvas, Monet brings together the stability of the bridge and water that continues to change orientation and color.

Look at the work
The guardrail first stands out with its cold tones. It rises from the left, reaches its summit a little after the center, then descends towards a lighter massif. Its blue-gray and mauve uprights are interrupted by greens, as if the foliage were crossing the construction. The willow on the left side falls in soft lines; on the right, the small touches of yellow and cream give the garden a drier light.
Under the apron, the water lilies are organized into uneven bands. The flowers at the bottom are tiny and tight, those in the center form a pink and white carpet, then some wider accents appear in the foreground. Between them, Monet places vertical dark green, turquoise or purple marks. The water therefore seems deep by the scale of the flowers, while remaining a surface covered with colored signs.
The walkway provides the frame; the true mobility of the image is born from the horizontal flowers crossed by the long fallout from the garden.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The arch combines lavender blue, cool green, gray white and some purple shadows. Preserving these passages avoids transforming the footbridge into a uniform decorative element.
Floral layers change size, density and spacing from bottom to bottom. This irregular rhythm builds the pool more surely than a geometric perspective.
At the bottom edge, the highlights become thicker and the red touches of the signature respond to the flowers. This area should remain dense without losing the differences between each green.
Details and visual documents
The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The main view measures 1,300 × 1,242 px. The actual photograph taken in front of the work at the Musée d'Orsay measures 1,257 × 1,202 px and the native detail 1,050 × 500 px. No files have been artificially enlarged; all three media are real decodable WebPs.
Documented benchmarks
These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.
The Musée d'Orsay keeps this oil on canvas from 1899 under the number RF 2004. It measures 89.5 × 92.5 cm, bears the signature and date at the bottom right and corresponds to number 1515 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.
After having shaped the pond and its footbridge in Giverny, Monet undertook a first suite in 1899 centered on this point of view. The same device allows him to compare the arch, the growth of plants and changes in light.
Durand-Ruel bought the painting from Monet in November 1900. Isaac de Camondo acquired it the next day, then bequeathed it to the State in 1911. After its passage in the national collections, it joined the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
