Cyprès aux blés d'or, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · End of June 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Wheat field with cypress, F717Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A field of golden wheat undulates in front of the Alpilles, a silver olive tree and a cypress tree that rises like a dark flame. Painted directly in front of the motif, this first large version transmits wind, heat and movement through a thick and immediately readable material.

Look at the work

Wheat, cypress and clouds follow the same current

The yellow field occupies the first third and curves in large waves, dotted with red poppies. On the left, the gray-green olive tree leans its branches; on the right, the dark cypress serves as the main vertical.

The blue hills form a jagged band behind the trees. Above, vast white, light blue and turquoise clouds rotate on themselves, extending the movement of the ears into the sky.

Each element has its material, but no area is isolated: the curves of the field, foliage, mountains and sky give the landscape a common breath.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Met keeps this canvas under the number 1993.132. It measures 73.2 × 93.4 cm and bears the references F717/JH1756.

01

The first painting in the composition

Van Gogh produced this version on the motif during the summer of 1889. He then took it up again in drawing and then in two variants painted in the fall, today in London and in private collections.

02

A material adapted to the wind

The thick layers and curved lines make the wheat and trees swing. The actual relief of the painting thus reinforces the impression of moving air.

03

Cypress concentrates the darkest value

The tree's almost black green contrasts with the clear clouds and golden field. Its vertical anchors a composition dominated by curves and diagonals.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Wheat field with cypress F717/JH1756 was painted in late June 1889. It bears the 1993.132 inventory at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Nature

A study painted directly outside

The Met's notice emphasizes the immediacy of the canvas, executed from nature. Subsequent revivals were more constructed, but this retains the energy of the first observation.

Judgment

One of its best summer landscapes

Van Gogh counted this sunny composition among his best paintings of the season. It brings together the motifs that obsessed him at the time: wheat, cypress, olive tree, mountain and big sky.

Collection

Joined the Met in 1993

The museum acquired the work thanks to a donation from the Annenberg Foundation. It is numbered 1993.132 and belongs to the department of European paintings.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the golden field, the poppies, the silver olive tree, the very dark cypress, the blue Alpilles and the great light swirls of the sky.

  • The black and green vertical of the cypress
  • The thick waves of yellow wheat
  • The little red punctuations of the poppies
  • The white, blue and turquoise spirals of the clouds
