À propos de l’œuvre
Cyprès et deux femmes, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · February 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Cypress and two womenReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A dark cypress rises almost to the upper edge of the canvas, while two tiny women pass by its foot. The bottle green foliage, surrounded by black and punctuated with red, stands out against a moving sky.
Look at the work
A monumental cypress measured by two silhouettes
The tree occupies the center and almost the entire height. Its narrow mass widens towards the middle before tightening into a point, like a flame or the obelisk to which Van Gogh compared the cypresses.
At the bottom of the canvas, a low wall, plants and two women in light dresses give the scale. The gray-blue sky wraps around the tree in curved touches that extend its vertical movement.
The figures do not tell a scene: their smallness makes the height of the cypress noticeable and transforms the tree into a real protagonist.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Van Gogh Museum preserves this painting under inventory s0147V1962. It bears the references F621/JH1888 and dates from February 1890.
The cypress as a living obelisk
Van Gogh associated the slender shape of the cypress with Egyptian monuments. Here, the silhouette is stable from a distance but entirely composed of loops and agitated lines when approached.
The difficult green bottle
In a letter to Theo, Van Gogh emphasizes the difficulty of making this shade very dark. It superimposes greens, blacks, yellows and some red accents to avoid a uniform mass.
The sky follows the growth of the tree
The gray and blue scrolls go around the top instead of constituting a simple background. They make the eye move from the women to the summit.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Cypress and two women is an oil on canvas mounted on panel of 43.5 × 27.2 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy in February 1890. It bears s0147V1962, F621 and JH1888.
An emblematic tree of the South
Cypresses punctuated the roads, gardens and cemeteries around Saint-Rémy. Van Gogh made it a recurring motif, sometimes isolated, sometimes associated with fields and mountains.
Two women to measure the giant
Placed in the foreground, the two light silhouettes are deliberately small. Their height immediately makes the disproportion of the tree perceptible.
Inventory s0147V1962
The painting remained with Theo then with the Van Gogh family before its transfer to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the slender shape of the cypress, the countless shades of the foliage, the two light silhouettes and the swirls of the sky without simplifying the flat black tree.
- The top of the cypress which almost reaches the upper edge
- The green, black and yellow curls of the foliage
- The two women in light dresses in the foreground
- The blue-gray clouds wrapping around the tree
