À propos de l’œuvre
Chalet arboré, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
Cottage with trees, F92aReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A massive cottage, seen almost from the front, fills the center of the painting under a pink and gray sky. The vast roof plunges towards the brick walls, while some dark foliage frames this rural architecture of Nuenen.
Look at the work
A low facade under a huge thatched roof
The black-brown roof occupies more than half of the house and goes down almost to the windows. Its irregular sections, its framework and its green moss give the building a very old appearance.
The facade aligns several small windows with light uprights and two dark openings. To the right, a strip of green land and a compact tree reveal the warm light of the sky.
Cottage with trees F92a/JH806 is a 22.5 × 34 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in June 1885. The work is today kept in a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh brings the house very close to the edge of the canvas. The roof forms a large, almost black triangular mass, balanced by the clear sky and the small vertical punctuations of the doors and windows.
The roof dominates the entire architecture
Its long slopes converge towards the summit and visually compress the facade. Olive green touches indicate moss and thatch irregularities.
The windows punctuate the wall
Their light gray uprights are repeated on the dark brick. This rhythm gives precision to the facade without breaking its massive simplicity.
The sky brings the only warmth
Roses, pale ochres and grays surround the roof. This late day light brings out the very dark silhouettes of the house and the trees.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
This version belongs to the series of cottages from June 1885. The references F92a/JH806 and its format of 22.5 × 34 cm distinguish it from F92, F93 and other houses painted at the same time.
One of the cottages in Nuenen
Van Gogh studies these dwellings for their construction, their aging and their link with peasant life, rather than as simple picturesque settings.
The F92a frontal composition
The large centered roof and row of windows allow F92a to be recognized. F93, kept in Cologne, on the contrary shows a tree dominating in front of a yellow sky.
A work put on sale in 2015
After several Dutch collections, the painting reappeared at Christie's in New York in November 2015. It remains in private collection.
