Branches d'acacia en fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Flowering acacia branchesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A gray branch crosses tight foliage where long creamy yellow clusters accumulate. On this small format, Van Gogh brings the pattern so close that the tree becomes an abstract network of light, green and almost black touches.

Look at the work

Clusters of light seen up close

The main branch rises diagonally from the lower left then divides towards the center. Small olive green and blue-gray leaves occupy the intervals, while very dark areas give depth to the foliage.

The flowers are not described one by one. They appear in short impastos, superimposed from lemon yellow to off-white. A cluster hangs in the center and several larger masses open in the upper half.

The tight framing removes any horizon: only the structure of the branch, the shade of the leaves and the shine of the flowers remain.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting NM 5939 can be recognized by its very small format, the gray-brown diagonal branch and the cascades of yellow flowers placed on a dark plant background.

01

A view without distance

Van Gogh frames the acacia as a fragment. The viewer sees neither complete trunk nor landscape, which focuses attention on the rhythms of the foliage and flowers.

02

Light constructed in thickness

The petals are obtained by thick touches, sometimes almost parallel. Their light material advances visually in front of the greens and blacks at the bottom.

03

A diagonal under the abundance

The branch provides the backbone of the composition. Without it, the clusters could seem scattered; with it, each floral mass finds a precise place.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Nationalmuseum preserves Acacia branches in flower under the number NM 5939. This oil on canvas of 33 × 24 cm is cataloged F821 and JH2015.

Museum

Inventory NM 5939

The Nationalmuseum notice also indicates a frame of 40 × 31 × 3 cm and links the work to Van Gogh's stay in Auvers-sur-Oise.

Subject

An isolated plant motif

The composition belongs to the studies of flowers and branches carried out during the artist's last weeks, but its close framing distinguishes it from bouquets in vases.

Scale

Only 33 × 24 cm

This small dimension reinforces the impression of direct study. The touch remains large and very readable, especially in light clusters.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the relief of the clusters, the diagonal of the branch and the almost black passages which give depth to the foliage.

  • The gray-brown branch that passes through the composition
  • Creamy yellow clusters painted in thick touches
  • Olive green leaves mixed with gray blue
  • The dark hollows that separate the floral masses
