A woman dressed in white stands in a sunny garden in Sainte-Adresse, protected by an umbrella. Its light silhouette occupies the left edge, while the rest of the canvas displays red, white and yellow massifs in front of a high wall of foliage. Monet does not treat the scene as a conventional portrait: the model, dress, flowers and shade of the trees participate in the same study of open-air light.
Look at the work
The model appears near the left edge, slightly set back from the foreground. Its white and lilac coat receives bluish shadows; the face remains sheltered by the light umbrella. This human verticality echoes the trunks and stands out in front of almost black green vegetation.
Pathways and flower beds cross the bottom of the composition in soft diagonals. Red flowers punctuate the center, then yellows and whites appear in brighter areas. At the bottom, the foliage closes the garden and brings out each passage exposed to the sun.
The white of the dress is not isolated: it collects the blues of the shade, the greens of the garden and the warm light of the flowers.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Placed very close to the edge, the woman does not control the composition alone. Its location gives the impression of an encounter during a walk and leaves the garden with an importance at least equal to that of the model.
The masses of trees provide a continuous dark background, but Monet animates it with multiple greens and browns. The flowers, the umbrella and the sides of the dress then become luminous foci rather than cut-out shapes.
Created in 1867, the painting extends Monet's research on life-size figures observed outside the workshop. Variable light fragments surfaces and calls into question the smooth modeling of the academic portrait.

The visual corresponds to the Hermitage Museum's GE-6505 inventory and Wildenstein number 68. Its available native definition of 2,200 × 1,782 px has been preserved as a true WebP, without oversampling.
Blues, lilacs, warm grays and a few greens describe its folds. Lightening the fabric evenly would make the volume and its belonging to the shade of the garden disappear.
Their keys change size and intensity depending on the distance. This irregularity avoids the decorative effect and maintains the depth of the flowerbeds.
The background contains cool greens, earths and small bright openings. A uniform black mass would harden the silhouette and remove air between the branches.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measures 82.3 × 101.5 cm. It is kept at the Hermitage Museum under the inventory GE-6505 and listed as Wildenstein 68.
The woman depicted is identified as the wife of Jacques Lecadre, cousin of Monet. The artist then worked in his aunt's garden in Sainte-Adresse, near Le Havre, a family place that he painted from several angles.
The canvas combines the dimensions of a large composition with the direct observation of changing light. Monet must match the figure to the shadows and colors of the garden rather than building it under stable workshop lighting.
The work belongs in particular to the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel then to the collector Sergei Shchukin. After the Soviet public collections, she joined the Hermitage, where she now carries the GE-6505 inventory.
