Two women appear on either side of a massif of dahlias which occupies almost the entire canvas. On the left, a silhouette seen from behind blends into a light dress; on the right, a face wearing a hat appears between the tall stems. Monet does not subordinate the flowers to the figures: red, yellow, pink and green make up a vibrant screen which transforms the garden scene into a colorful immersion.
Look at the work
The woman on the left turns her back on the viewer. Her gray and white dress is cut by the lower edge and by the first stems. On the right, the second woman only appears above the flowers: her light hat and pink face stand out against a vertical curtain of foliage.
The center is occupied by a profusion of yellow, orange, red and pink dahlias. The flowers are not described petal by petal; they are built by impasto and short touches. At the bottom, the green becomes darker and denser, then a few small light flowers open the foreground.
The garden does not serve as a setting for the models: it absorbs them, fragments them and imposes its rate of growth on the entire canvas.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
No face is fully offered to the gaze. One of the women is seen from behind, the other partially masked; this arrangement makes their presence an experience in the garden rather than a psychological study.
The leaves and flowers are wider and darker in the foreground, then become smaller upwards. Tight overlaps replace a perspective constructed by lines.
The red and yellow touches remain visible as material. They first attract the eye, before the female silhouettes are gradually discovered between the stems.
Reference image
The reference image corresponds to inventory O 3196 of the National Gallery in Prague and Wildenstein number 383. Its native definition of 2988 × 2465 px was retained during WebP encoding.
Some are compact spots, others small open circles. This diversity avoids the decorative sowing effect and restores the depth of the massif.
Its grays, blues and pinks take on neighboring colors. Too clear an outline would detach the figure, while Monet visually penetrates it into the garden.
Long stems and erect foliage frame the capped head. They provide a structural contrast to the round, scattered flowers in the center.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measures 54.5 × 65.5 cm. It is kept in the National Gallery in Prague under the inventory O 3196 and classified Wildenstein 383.
The Prague notice identifies the work as Ladies in Flowers. Monet favors the relationship between figures and vegetation; the models are deliberately fragmented by framing and flowers.
During the 1870s, Monet often painted Camille, relatives and her garden in Argenteuil. Here, the plant profusion allows him to simultaneously study filtered light, impasto and complementary colors.
The painting belongs to the National Gallery in Prague and is attached to the modern art collections of the Veletrtzní palâc. Its documentary identification includes the date 1875 and the number W383.
