Pink, yellow and white water lilies open onto olive green water crossed by a broad purple reflection. The absence of a horizon tightens the paint on the surface of the pool, while the floating leaves form two irregular banks around a calmer central area. This 1919 version combines panoramic breadth with a still very readable touch.

Look at the work

The flowers frame a purple reflection which opens the surface in the center of the canvas

The leaves are concentrated on the left, the lower edge and the right part. Their oval shapes remain open, made of green, yellow, blue and brown. Red and pink flowers are more numerous in the upper half, while a few larger cream corollas stabilize the foreground.

In the center, a purple and blue-gray vertical crosses the water without becoming an identifiable object. It acts as breathing between masses of vegetation. On the right, a denser green reflection descends from the top and responds to the large circular leaves at the bottom.

The subject is not a collection of flowers: Monet organizes densities around an interval of light that makes the entire pelvis breathe.

A central void filled with color

The purple passage contains gray, pink and blue. It must remain calm but never uniform, because its small variations give the main depth of the canvas.

Sheets with incomplete contours

Water lilies are constructed in curved and broken touches. Surrounding them with a dark line or repeating the same shape would remove their floating and diversity of distances.

Hot flowers distributed in groups

Pink, red, yellow and cream are mainly concentrated at the top and sides. Their irregular sizes and spacing prevent the composition from becoming decorative.

The Metropolitan Museum dates this oil on canvas to 1919. It measures 101 × 200 cm and bears the signature and date Claude Monet 1919 at the bottom left. The catalog raisonné records it under number 1891.

A painting intended for the market in 1919

The Met indicates that Monet created this painting and three similar compositions with their sale in mind. Despite his reluctance to part with his recent works, he wrote to Gaston and Josse Bernheim that he was working passionately on this group, which the two merchants quickly purchased.

Collection03

The Annenberg legacy at the Metropolitan Museum

The work belongs to the Walter H. and Leonore Annenberg Collection. Given to the Met in 1998 then completed by the bequest of Walter H. Annenberg in 2002, it is exhibited at Fifth Avenue in gallery 822.
