The facade of Palazzo Contarini fills the upper part, while the Grand Canal occupies almost half of the canvas. A dark gondola waits in front of the central entrance and several red posts rise into the reflection. Monet transforms the stone architecture into a lavender blue surface, crossed by mauves, greens and warm touches.
Look at the work
The framing cuts the sides and top of the palace. The windows and arches are organized into horizontal registers, but the central entrance and the balcony catch the eye. The gondola placed just in front of this opening creates a vertical axis extended by its dark reflection.
In the lower half, the water becomes a field of blue, turquoise and purple. The red posts provide small warm accents and repeat the verticals of the facade. The line of separation between stone and canal remains deliberately uncertain, as if the architecture were dissolving in its reflection.
The W1767 version does not present the palace as a still setting: it lowers it into the water until it confuses the material of the stone and that of the canal.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet dedicated two paintings to the Palazzo Contarini in 1908. The horizontal version W1766 tightens the facade; W1767, on the contrary, adopts a vertical format, leaves more room for water and places the gondola in front of the central entrance.
The pointed windows, medallions, balconies and water door remain identifiable, but no ornament is isolated by a continuous outline. Architectural repetitions give structure, while color retains the sensation of a moving light.
The Kunstmuseum St. Gallen collection report records the inscription "Claude Monet 1908" at the bottom left. This area remains close to the edge and should be preserved when the format ordered requires framing adjustment.

The single reference image measures 1742 × 1989 px. It corresponds to version W1767 from St. Gallen and has been encoded as a real WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.
The facade and the water occupy similar proportions. The gondola, the posts and the central entrance cross their separation and give the vertical format very strong continuity.
Blues and purples dominate the stone like water. The reds of the posts and the balcony warm the center without breaking the cold envelope.
Brush strokes remain visible and change direction around arches, windows and reflections. Reproduction must maintain this freedom while maintaining the alignments that make the palate recognizable.

This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 92.3 × 81.5 cm. It belongs to the Ernst Schürpf-Stiftung and is kept at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen.
Bernheim-Jeune and Durand-Ruel acquired the work from Monet in May 1912. After its passage in the Arthur Meeker collection in Chicago, it was acquired by the Saint-Galloise foundation in 1950.
The Wildenstein museum and catalog identify this facade as the Palazzo Contarini. The vertical composition, the central gondola and the number W1767 make it possible to precisely distinguish this version.
