Claude Monet · Frozen Seine · 1880-1881 · W569

The Debacle on the Seine W569hand painted reproduction

Broken patches of ice cover the Seine and reflect a purple-gray sky. On both banks, bare trees and poplars approach towards the center, while the river remains almost entirely open in the foreground. Painted in 1880-1881, this 60 × 99 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Sammlung Oskar Reinhart "Am Römerholz" in Winterthur and corresponds to Wildenstein 569.

Look at the work

The ice fragments the river into a mosaic of cold light

The Seine occupies the lower two thirds of the canvas. Its banks converge gently towards a central passage, framed by lines of poplars. This very low construction gives the viewer the feeling of being placed at water level.

The ice sheets alternate white, pale blue, gray green and mauve. Some are painted by large horizontal touches, others by thin vertical lines which become reflections; the sky takes on the same colors in a more matte harmony.

The subject is not a still surface: it is the moment when the frost breaks, when the water, ice and their reflections become difficult to distinguish.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A river almost without a bank in the foreground

Framing eliminates any nearby edges. The ice fragments come directly to the bottom of the canvas and look into the current.

02

Poplars as a measure of distance

The large lateral trunks decrease towards the center. Their repetition gives a regular depth in the middle of the unstable shapes of the debacle.

03

A cold palette crossed with pink

Blue and gray dominate, but very soft mauves and pinks circulate in the sky and water. They prevent winter from becoming monochrome.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only official image measures 2,984 × 1,799 px after removing the exterior photographic border. It is encoded in real WebP without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve irregularity of ice sheets

Their size, orientation and brightness vary continuously; regular repetition would remove the feeling of drift.

Color02

Preserve vertical reflections in the center

They connect distant trees to the current and give the water a depth different from the large white touches of ice.

Matter03

Keep the banks in a colorful mist

Trees should remain readable without hard black, thanks to very muted blues, grey greens and some browns.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Sammlung Oskar Reinhart "Am Römerholz" documents The Debacle on the Seine, oil on canvas from 1880-1881, 60 × 99 cm, listed in the Wildenstein catalog under number 569.

Episode01

The thaw after the exceptional winter of 1879-1880

The Seine had frozen around Vétheuil. When the ice broke, Monet observed the fragments carried away by the current and their color changes.

Pattern02

The river as the main subject

The houses are absent and the banks remain secondary. The entire composition focuses on the changing surface of the water and ice.

Collection03

The Sammlung Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur

The painting belongs to the ensemble presented in the villa "Am Römerholz", where the French impressionists occupy an essential place.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The ice sheets in the foreground
  • Poplars that converge towards the center
  • Blue, green and mauve reflections

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room
