The Debacle, gray weather W560hand painted reproduction

Under a beige and gray sky, large broken patches of ice occupy the Seine. The distant bank is reduced to a dark strip on the left, while a ravaged tree and broken branches rise to the right above the water. Painted during the thaw of January 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 68 × 90 cm is kept at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon under number 451 and corresponds to Wildenstein 560.

A landscape of broken ice where the cold devastated the shore

The light blocks fit together like an irregular mosaic from the foreground to the bottom. They almost mask the current, but thin gray, green and brown passages separate their contours and give the sensation of a mass still in motion.

The tree on the right is not just a picturesque foil. Its dark, twisted and incomplete branches bear witness to the violence of freezing and thawing; their verticality contrasts with the large horizontal plates which cover the river.

The deliberately restricted range reinforces the event: Monet replaces the brilliance of a snowy landscape with dirty whites, warm grays and browns that make the ice heavy and dangerous.

A surface almost entirely occupied by the debacle

The horizon is set high and the river advances to the lower edge. The viewer not only looks at the ice from the shore: he finds himself visually caught in its extent.

The destroyed tree as a vertical counterpoint

Its black branches cut out the sky and concentrate the drama on the right. They give a measure to the ice sheets and recall the damage caused by the phenomenon.

Light without direct sunlight

The sky, water and ice cubes share similar values. Monet distinguishes them by the temperature of the grays and by the broad brush strokes that intersect.

Keep damaged tree on straight edge

Its silhouette specifies the scale and concentrates the tension. Removing it would transform the canvas into a simple study of an icy surface.

The thawing of the Seine in January 1880

After an exceptionally harsh winter, the ice breaks around Vétheuil. Monet observes moving patches, damaged trees and rapid color changes on the water.

A series of approximately eighteen works

The Gulbenkian notice places the painting in a group devoted to the debacle. This version is distinguished by its gray weather, its large blocks and the devastated tree on the right.

Provenance03

Purchase by Calouste Gulbenkian on October 16, 1925

The work was acquired in New York through Knoedler & Co. after belonging to the Hoentschel collection; today it bears the number 451.
