Dislocated patches of ice cover the Seine under a milky sky. The right bank, loaded with red and purple trees, juts out towards the river; in the distance, the Moisson Islands dissolve in a cold mist. Painted in 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 65.2 × 93 cm is preserved in the Louvre Museum under the number RF 1961 61 and corresponds to Wildenstein 572.
Look at the work
The perspective is organized around a clear passage in the center. The trees massed on both banks frame this gap, but their contours blend into the pink gray sky. No clear horizon permanently separates water from the atmosphere.
In the foreground, the ice cubes are rendered by thick, white, blue and green touches that appear to float above darker water. Their oblique direction leads downstream and gives slow force to the current without resorting to large waves.
The natural phenomenon becomes a painting experience: each patch of ice modifies the color of the river and transforms the depth from one moment to the next.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
After the extreme cold of the winter of 1879 -1880, the frozen Seine broke up at the beginning of January. Monet followed the debacle from Vétheuil and drew from it a series of views which changed the angle, time and state of the river.
Bluish gray, sea green, pale pink, mauve and red-brown mingle without violent contrast. This range allows you to distinguish ice, water, branches and mist while maintaining the unity of the cold.
The right massif is dense and close; the left edge remains lower and lighter. Between the two, the river narrows towards the distant islands and gives its depth to W572.

The only image is a real photograph of W572 at the Louvre Museum, with its golden frame and the wall of the room. The file of 2764 × 2132 px is encoded as a real WebP without artificial enlargement.
They must not form regular patterns or continuous foam. Their sizes, orientations and intervals make the rupture of the river visible.
The mist makes certain limits disappear. Trees that are too black or a horizon that is too clear would remove the enveloping atmosphere from the picture.
The clear material placed on the water is essential for moving the ice cubes forward. A smooth surface would weaken the contrast between solid ice and current.

The Louvre Museum preserves La Débâcle near Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1880, 65.2 × 93 cm, inventory RF 1961 61 and catalog Wildenstein 572.
The sound and violence of the thaw mark the inhabitants of the valley. Monet produced a series of approximately eighteen paintings devoted to ice and released water.
The right bank corresponds to the Haute-Île sector, before Chantemesle. This orientation explains the succession of wooded masses and the central escape towards the distance.
The painting was given at the Louvre in 1961 subject to usufruct, then physically entered the collections in 1977. It bears the number RF 1961 61.
