À propos de l’œuvre

La Débâcle de la Seine, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1893 · Museum Langmatt 154 · W1344

The Debacle of the Seine W1344hand painted reproduction

At dusk, patches of ice cover the Seine like a lilac blue mosaic. A strip of purple hillside closes the horizon while a yellow gap is reflected in the water. Monet not only describes the thaw: he makes you feel the moment when the warm light still passes through a landscape entirely gripped by the cold.

Look at the work

Blue-purple ice cubes crossed by the last light of day

The very elongated format divides the scene into three bands: the pale sky, the hillside which descends to the left and the large surface of the river. A bouquet of red-brown trees serves as a pivot in the center. In front of him, the ice cubes scatter to the lower edge and give the painting its discontinuous rhythm.

The palette is based on the opposition between the cold blues of the ice and the soft yellows of the reflected sky. The violets of the hillside extend into the water, but the keys change direction: oblique on the bank, horizontal in the current and thicker on the floating blocks.

In W1344, the debacle becomes a chord of light: the evening yellow does not warm up the scene, it makes the blues more intense.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Last canvas of a winter campaign

The very cold winter of January 1893 pushed Monet to work on the frozen Seine near Bennecourt and Port-Villez. W1344 belongs to this tight series of views where he successively observes the frost, the breakage of the ice and its drift on the river.

02

A landscape constructed by uneven bands

The sky occupies little height, the hillside forms a long diagonal and the water dominates almost half of the canvas. This distribution gives breadth to the river while keeping the eye close to the moving surface of the ice cubes.

03

Matter distinguishes ice from water

Floating plates require heavier touches, often taken in blue, mauve and off-white. The current retains smoother and yellow passages. The reproduction must keep this difference in relief rather than covering the entire canvas with a uniform impasto.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used: the complete view of the Langmatt canvas, converted into a real WebP and preserved in 2,200 × 1,282 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A diagonal hillside facing a horizontal river

The purple slope rises to the right and responds to the horizontal circulation of ice cubes. The central bouquet of trees stabilizes these two opposite movements.

Color02

Lavender, glacier blue, straw yellow and red brown

No white is neutral. The ice cubes mix blue and pink, the light turns yellow and the trees take on a wine-colored hue that focuses the eye.

Matter03

Short touches, smears and thick covers

The brush fragments the water into small superimposed marks. On the hillside, the keys follow the slope; in the sky, they become finer in order to preserve breathing.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Langmatt Foundation keeps this version under inventory 154; Daniel Wildenstein's catalog raisonné records it under number 1344.

Identification01

Ice cubes, twilight effect

Also known as The Debacle of the Seine, this oil on canvas from 1893 measures 60 × 99.7 cm. It bears the number 1344 in the Wildenstein catalog.

Collection02

Museum Langmatt, inventory 154

The work belongs to the Sidney and Jenny Brown Foundation and is housed at the Langmatt Museum in Baden, Switzerland. Its inventory record is numbered 154.

Context03

The Seine froze in January 1893

After a severe period of frost, the Seine begins to break free. Monet follows the rapid evolution of the river and transforms each change in light, current and ice density into an autonomous composition.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Langmatt version, inventory 154 and Wildenstein 1344
  • The original panoramic format of 60 × 99.7 cm
  • Blue-lavender ice cubes distinguished from yellow water by their material
  • The red-brown silhouette of the trees preserved without hardening the landscape
