Reproduction details

Claude Monet · Vétheuil · winter 1879 -1880 · W566

The Debacle at Vétheuil W566hand painted reproduction

After the exceptional frost of the winter of 1879 -1880, the Seine became free and brought patches of ice in front of Vétheuil. Monet chose a format one meter wide: the river occupies almost the entire surface, the poplars stand up like thin landmarks and the snow-covered hillsides dissolve in a blue-gray air. This 60 × 100 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza under number 680 (1977.86). It corresponds to Wildenstein 566.

Look at the work

The slow movement of the ice transforms the Seine into a vast surface of silence, punctuated by the trees and their reflections

The bank line crosses the painting very low under the snow-covered hillsides. A succession of narrow poplars, denser on the right, cuts out the horizon and extends into the water with vertical reflections. The dark masses of the trees on the left and the embankment on the right close the ends without interrupting the panorama.

In the foreground, the ice cubes are rendered by white, green, black and blue gestures that slide horizontally. A calmer area of water in the center reflects the sky and opens a cold depth. The reduced palette is not monochrome, however: reds in the brush and discreet greens on the banks give the thaw a vital tension.

Alice Hoschedé says she was awakened by a crash similar to thunder and saw, despite the darkness, the white masses rushing down the river: the painting remembers the silent aftermath of this spectacular phenomenon.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The elongated format follows the current

The width of 100 cm accentuates the horizontal planes of water, ice and hillsides. The gaze advances laterally like the plates carried downstream, without a single center.

02

Trees interrupt continuity with measure

Their vertical trunks and reflections form an irregular rhythm. They give the scale of the river while preventing the vast clear surface from becoming uniform.

03

A restricted pallet sets in the cold

Gray blues, dirty whites, black greens and browns are placed in quick touches. The nearby values produce the misty veil and the melancholy noted by the museum notice.

Read this specific version

The only image comes from the official file of the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. It is limited to 3,000 × 1,798 px, without artificial enlargement, then encoded as a real WebP.

Composition01

Preserve the panoramic proportion

The composition depends on the ratio 60 × 100 cm. Lateral cropping would remove the masses of trees balancing the ends and reduce the sensation of current.

Color02

Differentiate free water from ice sheets

The center reflects the sky more, while the foreground is broken up by opaque touches. This alternation must remain readable without drawing each ice cube.

Matter03

Keep red accents under the snow

The warm brush prevents the scene from turning blue and white. Their discretion reinforces the depth and makes the grays of the landscape vibrate.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza documents The Debacle at Vétheuil, oil on canvas of 60 × 100 cm, inventory 680 (1977.86) and catalog Wildenstein 566.

Event01

The rupture of the frozen Seine during the winter of 1879 -1880

Monet then lived in Vétheuil, about sixty kilometers from Paris. He follows the transformation of the river in a series of approximately seventeen paintings devoted to freezing, ice cubes and thawing.

Dating02

Cataloged in 1880, but signed and dated 1881

The museum puts forward two possibilities: Monet was able to add the signature at the time of a probable sale to Durand-Ruel in February 1881, or take the painting back to his studio after observing the motif.

Resonance03

A landscape associated with the recent loss of Camille Monet

The reduced range, the absence of characters and the calm which follows the din of the thaw have often been compared to the mourning of the artist, whose wife died in September 1879.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 566 version and the 680 inventory (1977.86)
  • The 60 × 100 cm panorama led by the current
  • Poplars and their vertical reflections
  • The fragmented ice sheets in the foreground

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This panoramic landscape is suitable above a sofa, low sideboard or bed. A bluish gray, off-white or mineral green wall and a smoked oak frame extend the winter atmosphere while bringing out the red touches.
