Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 60.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Hermitage Museum under the number ʻ0.5 × 81.5 cm and corresponds to Wildenstein 1073.

Look at the work

The millstone gives a simple presence to the entire landscape of Giverny

Placed slightly to the left of the center, the millstone occupies the foreground without hiding the farms. The strips of meadow lead towards the houses then towards a line of trees which closes the horizon.

Green, coral, yellow and blue are placed in quick touches in the field. The millstone combines cream straw, green and pink; the sky mixes light blue, gray and mauve, suggesting unstable weather.

Before the famous series of 1890 -1891, the millstone was still an element among the fields, houses and trees of the lived countryside.

The millstone does not yet fill the frame as in the late series. It dialogues with the farm and the successive plans of the meadow.

The red and green areas of the field do not follow a strict geometric perspective. Their alternation is enough to keep the houses away.

A sky that changes the whole scene

The light remains bright on the meadow as gray clouds approach. This contrast gives the landscape a feeling of fleeting moment.

It is neither perfectly conical nor symmetrical. Its small variations in contour give it a natural presence.

They respond to roofs and warm shadows of straw. Mitigating them would reduce depth and chromatic energy.

Maintain secondary houses

Their light walls must remain visible but without invented details. They place the millstone in a real agricultural landscape.

Four years before the great Meules series

Monet already studied the effects of light on millstones in the 1880s, but kept them within a larger landscape.

Location02

The meadow near the Giverny house

The Hermitage brings this view closer to a landscape painted the previous year without the millstone. Monet therefore works on a familiar site and its seasonal transformations.

Provenance03

Former Sergei Shchukin collection

Acquired by the Moscow collector in 1904, the painting then passed to the Museum of Modern Western Art before entering the Hermitage in 1931.
