Two millstones stand out in front of the hills of Giverny in late-day light, the largest taking on a red-brown hue while the sky changes from pink to gold. Painted in 1888 -1889, this 65 × 92 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama and corresponds to Wildenstein 1213.

The setting sun transforms two agricultural volumes into masses of light

The large millstone occupies the left half and advances almost to the lower edge; the second, narrower and further away, is placed on the right. Their difference in scale opens the field towards a line of barely perceptible houses and the blue hills.

Red, brown, orange and pink thicken the two millstones and the ground, while blue gray and green cool the distance. The sky superimposes yellow, peach, pink and mauve without a clear cloud line, like a luminous envelope around the shapes.

The pattern remains stable, but its color changes with time: the millstones serve as solid markers to measure what the sunset does to the field, hills and air.

The large triangular mass dominates without occupying the exact center. The small grinding wheel extends the reading to the right and immediately makes the depth of the field noticeable.

The blue-gray hills isolate the red silhouettes of the millstones. This temperature opposition separates the planes more effectively than a hard contour.

Research prior to the large series

W1213 belongs to the three views of two millstones painted after the 1888 harvest. These tests precede by two years the twenty-five canvases from 1890 -1891 devoted to the same motif.

Straw is not painted in a uniform earthy shade. Red, pink, purple and orange allow you to translate the sunset without losing the material.

Keep the sky bright but textured

The yellow and pink passages must remain constructed by fine superimposed touches. A smooth gradient would make the vibration of the air disappear.
