Look at the work

Evening effect is measured by the length of the shadow

The sun remains out of field, but its direction organizes all the painting. The illuminated side of the large millstone receives roses and ochres, while its left side changes to purple. A blue-gray shadow stretches diagonally towards the foreground and meets the horizontal touches of the field.

At the back, the second gerbier stands out in front of houses almost melted into the vegetation. The purple hill closes the horizon without darkening the sky. Monet thus maintains a diffuse light across the entire width, even where the shapes become distant and not very detailed.

Evening is not told by a visible sun: it can be read in the orientation of the keys, the temperature of the shadows and the color of the straw.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A light reconstructed by the complements

Pink and orange appear brighter in contact with blues and greens. These oppositions run through the millstone like the field; they must remain nested, without mechanically separating hot zone and cold zone.

A deliberately unspectacular sky

The pale sky occupies a small band and leaves the main role to the gerbiers. Its gray yellows and light blues serve as a luminous reserve, while the soil material remains denser and more contrasted.

A canvas materially linked to the series

Art Institute research identified a thread correspondence with seven other paintings by Monet. This observation shows that several works from different series were prepared on the same canvas roll.

The shadow mixes blue, mauve, green and a few pinkish repetitions. Painting it a uniform gray would make the warm light around it disappear.

The straw is not detailed strand by strand. Short brushstrokes change direction depending on volume and create a surface that is both strong and mobile.

Matter03

A distant kept in the air

Houses and hills are treated with lower contrasts than the large millstone. This restraint is essential so as not to flatten the three planes.
