The movement of the wave meets the apparent stillness of the horizon

The dark beach enters from the lower left corner and forms a short diagonal. Just ahead, the foam occupies a wide white and gray-green band; a higher wave rises in the center before falling to the right.

The black sail is placed slightly to the right of the center, with a small hull and a barely indicated figure. The distant coastline remains very low. Clouds occupy almost two thirds of the height, in touches of blue, gray, cream and slate.

A single sail is enough to measure space; all the energy of the canvas is concentrated in the wave which advances towards the spectator.

A dominant sky

The low height of the horizon gives great amplitude to the clouds. Their repeated touches create a general movement that responds to the small waves of the sea.

The surf line starts from the beach and crosses the foreground to the right. It brings the viewer closer to the water and prevents the landscape from being reduced to horizontal bands.

Sailing as an absolute contrast

Its almost black shape is the darkest point of the composition. It gains presence thanks to the whites and light blues that surround it, despite its small size.
