Cliffs near Dieppe, Hermitage W1467hand painted reproduction

Under an overcast sky, the cliff juts out from the right and overlooks an almost still sea. Cold roses, blue grays and purples soften the rock to the point of mist. Monet painted this coast near Dieppe in 1897, not as an immutable relief, but as a mass transformed by air and light.

Look at the work

A monumental cliff slides into a pale sea under a sky where pink crosses gray

The coast forms a diagonal descending from right to center. Its grassy summit is indicated by a few muted greens, while the wall mixes beige, mauve, pink and blue. The contours are gradually lost towards the distance.

On the left, the sea and the sky come together with their clear values. Small horizontal touches are enough to make the water feel; above, wider passages organize the clouds. This difference in gesture maintains the horizon line without hardening it.

The power of the cliff comes less from its design than from the contrast between its colorful material and the silent expanse that surrounds it.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A rock mass placed out of the center

The cliff occupies the right and leaves a large marine opening on the left. Its visual weight depends on this asymmetry and the slope which leads towards the distance.

02

Overcast weather rich in color

The gray sky contains pink, blue and purple. These shades repeat in rock and water, creating a common atmosphere without erasing the planes.

03

Air-dissolved contours

The distant coast becomes lighter and less detailed. Reproduction must maintain this progressive loss of contrast, essential to depth.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference photograph measures 3,068 × 2,012 px. It has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement in order to preserve the nuances of the canvas and its visible surface.

Composition01

A dominant coastal diagonal

The upper profile of the cliff leads the gaze to the center, then the sea opens the scene to the left. The relationship between these two movements defines the composition.

Color02

Pink and purple in chalk

Rock is not white. Warm and cold tones alternate on its wall, reflecting the changing sky and giving volume without strong drawing.

Matter03

Climate-friendly touches

The gestures remain more melted in the sky and more fragmented on the cliff. Their contrast simultaneously suggests the humidity of the air and the roughness of the coast.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern the painting of the Hermitage Museum, inventory ʻonds-8992 and Wildenstein 1467.

Identification01

Hermitage ʻonds-8992, Wildenstein 1467

This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 65 × 100.5 cm. It is kept at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and registered under Wildenstein number 1467.

Title02

Cliffs near Dieppe

Signature03

Claude Monet, bottom right

The signature is in the lower right corner. It blends into the tones of the coast and should not become too contrasting an element in the reproduction.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Hermitage, ʻilt-8992 and W1467
  • The horizontal ratio of 65 × 100.5 cm
  • The diagonal of the cliff held facing the large marine opening
  • The pinks and purples preserved in the overcast sky and the rock
