The cliffs of Pourville barely emerge from a pink-blue mist, above a calm sea whose clear touches dissolve the limit with the sky. Signed Claude Monet 82 lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 61 × 74 cm is kept at the Birmingham Museum of Art under number 1981.40 and corresponds to Wildenstein 711.

Look at the work

The mist erases the contours without removing the depth of the coast

The shore enters from the lower left corner and leads to a succession of increasingly pale cliffs. The nearest mass remains low; distant heights appear suspended above the water before melting into the sky.

Blue, sea green, pink, mauve and cream overlap with few contrasts. A few darker lines are enough to place the beach and the relief, while the lighter passages give the humid air its presence.

The composition remains readable because Monet retains small temperature differences between the sea, the sky and the cliffs: the mist connects the planes instead of completely erasing them.
