Look at the work

The folds of the bags form an irregular architecture around the bottle

The bag on the left descends vertically with a wide yellow stripe and an oval label. On the right, a second green fabric folds around a red frame or board, in front of which the bottle stands.

The foreground is occupied by a crumpled yellow-green material and a lying dark object. Van Gogh treats fabrics in large angular planes, without trying to smooth their bumps or tears.

Still life with two bags and a bottle F55/JH532 is an oil on canvas mounted on panel of 31.7 × 42 cm, painted in Nuenen in November 1884 and kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Here, soft surfaces replace the usual pottery. The vertical bottle stabilizes a set of folds, edges and diagonals.

01

The yellow band becomes the main signal

It runs through the left bag from top to bottom and leads to the label. Its light contrasts with the deep greens.

02

The red frame encloses the bottle

Its two angular edges surround the black glass and reinforce its silhouette without resorting to a light background.

03

The fabrics are constructed by facets

Greens, grays, yellows and blacks are juxtaposed in large sections. This invoice reflects the weight and thickness of the bags.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F55/JH532, the format of 31.7 × 42 cm and the date of November 1884 distinguish this work from other still lifes of bags painted in Nuenen.

Subject

The two bags are the real volumes of the painting

The bottle first catches the eye, but the folds and seams take up most of the surface and determine the entire composition.

Period

A search for tone in Nuenen

Van Gogh uses a reduced palette of greens, browns and blacks, animated by some brighter yellows and reds.

Support
