The Bible has material weight
The thickness of the volume, the hollow of the binding and the falling pages are shaped by large touches. The book almost becomes a monument placed on the table.

Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · October 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands
A heavy open Bible dominates the table, accompanied by a candlestick with an extinguished candle and a short novel by Émile Zola. Van Gogh thus contrasts his pastor father's book with The Joy of Living, a modern reading that he himself had manipulated a lot.
Look at the work
The monumental Bible opens in a fan and occupies almost the entire width. Its thick back, heavy pages and clasps give the book a physical presence, while the yellow novel appears small and close to the edge.
The vertical candlestick balances the oblique of the novel. The pages are painted gray, beige and muted green rather than white; a few orange and blue accents make the surface vibrate within a largely brown and black space.
Still Life in the Bible F117/JH946 is an oil on canvas measuring 65.7 × 78.5 cm, painted in Nuenen in October 1885. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0008V1962.
Composition, touch and color
The Van Gogh Museum directly connects the objects to the intellectual tensions between Vincent and his father Theodorus, a pastor who died a few months earlier. The family Bible and Zola's novel compare religious tradition and modernity.
The thickness of the volume, the hollow of the binding and the falling pages are shaped by large touches. The book almost becomes a monument placed on the table.
Émile Zola's Joy of Living appears in yellow in the foreground. Its small size and oblique orientation contrast with the stability of the Bible.
The candlestick stands behind the books, but its flame is missing. This absence reinforces the gravity of the composition without imposing a single symbolic reading.
