À propos de l’œuvre

Nature morte : bol aux marguerites, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May 1888 · Arles

Daisies, Arles, F591Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A low bowl contains a mass of fleshy leaves and white daisies, several stems of which fall on the table. Van Gogh brings the pattern so close to the edge of the canvas that the bouquet seems to extend beyond the small format.

Look at the work

A simple bowl becomes a landscape of leaves and flowers

The ocher container is seen slightly from above and occupies almost the entire width of the center. The dark green leaves overlap in compact mass; the white flowers, more spaced apart, punctuate this vegetation like small lights.

The background and table are painted in neighboring blue-green. Only the key directions distinguish them: vertical and airy marks behind the bouquet, thick oblique and horizontal lines in the foreground.

Marguerites, Arles is an oil on canvas of 33 × 41.9 cm painted in May 1888. Referenced F591/JH1429, it belongs to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts under number 2014.207.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This small canvas concentrates several Van Gogh researches in Arles: simplification of the container, close framing, reinforced local colors and visible variation of the touch depending on the material observed.

01

The bouquet overflows from its container

The leaves almost completely hide the opening of the bowl. Several flowers and stems cross its boundaries, giving the pattern irregular and lively growth.

02

Daisies are accents, not a uniform carpet

Each white flower is isolated by a green or blue outline. Their asymmetrical distribution guides the gaze from the lower left towards the upper right edge.

03

The table is a thick and mobile surface

Van Gogh accumulates touches of turquoise, beige and bluish gray around the bowl. The pictorial material animates a deliberately shallow space.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F591/JH1429, May 1888 and issue 2014.207 identify the still life today titled Daisies, Arles by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Period

A floral study of the first months in Arles

Van Gogh moved to Arles in February 1888. In spring, flowers, orchards and simple objects were used to experience the southern light and a lighter palette.

Format

A compact canvas of 33 × 41.9 cm

The very tight framing gives the small support a strong presence: the bowl, stems and flowers touch almost every edge of the composition.

Collection

Paul Mellon's legacy to the VMFA

The work definitively entered the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2014 with the pieces preserved in usufruct by Rachel Lambert Mellon. It is numbered 2014.207.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the flattened shape of the bowl, the density of the leaves, the irregular position of the daisies, the hanging stems and the changes of direction in the blue-green table.

  • The ocher bowl seen slightly from above
  • The dark mass of leaves
  • Isolated white daisies
  • The stems falling in front of the bowl
  • The blue-green table with thick touches
