Look at the work

Four jugs give each stoneware its own color and silhouette

The narrow bottle on the left opens the composition. Two large vertical jugs occupy the center; a third, darker, stands behind, then a fourth lies diagonally towards the bowl.

The contours are not drawn uniformly: they appear when a yellow or green meets the background. This method makes objects emerge through color contrasts rather than smooth modeling.

Still Life with Four Jugs F50/JH529 is a 33.8 × 43.1 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in September - October 1885. It bears the inventory KM 110.381 at the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The palette remains dark, but the oppositions of yellow, orange and green announce a more active search for complementary contrasts.

01

Each jug has its own character

One is orange-red, the next yellow, the third dark green and the last lying down. Hue differences replace decorative details.

02

The coated container puts perspective to the test

Its opening is directed towards the viewer, but its slightly floating position still reveals the learning of spatial construction.

03

The white bowl closes the composition

Its clear, round shape responds to the high necks of the jugs and creates a bright pause in the lower right corner.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Kroeller-Müller Museum notice documents F50/JH529, the format of 33.8 × 43.1 cm, the date September - October 1885 and the inventory KM 110.381.

Series

One of seven pottery still lifes

After a summer devoted to the outdoors, Van Gogh returned to the studio and painted a group of seven compositions with jugs and bottles.

Color

An application of the theories of Charles Blanc

It seeks to differentiate materials through color contrasts that reinforce each other, even if the whole remains deliberately tonal.

Technique

A freer and thicker touch

The museum highlights a sometimes impasto execution, a sign of growing confidence despite the difficulties of perspective.
