Lavacourt under the snow W511hand painted reproduction

A bank of blue snow descends towards the Seine, while the houses of Lavacourt line up to the right under their white roofs. On the opposite bank, a pink and golden light warms the landscape without erasing the cold. Look at the work

Snow in the shade responds to the pink light from the opposite bank

The foreground is occupied by a wide snowy slope covered in blues and purples. The Seine opens to the left, then the trees and houses draw a strong diagonal which leads towards the bottom.

The distant shore receives roses, pale yellows and warm whites. This bright area contrasts with the cold tones of the roofs and the nearby embankment. A small dark boat punctuates the water near the center.

Snow is not a uniform white: it becomes the place where blue shadow, pink light, the reflection of water and the material of the brush meet.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal formed by the houses

The facades and trees start from the right and decrease towards the center. This line leads the view along the river without resorting to a road.

02

Two temperatures for two banks

The nearby embankment is cold and bluish; the opposite slope receives a pink light. Monet constructs space through this chromatic opposition.

03

A winter painted outdoors

The broad foreground sweeps and quick touches of the trees demonstrate direct observation of the changing effects on snow and water.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference image of 5,855 × 4,226 px has been converted into a true WebP of 3,000 × 2,165 px. The definition reveals the blues and pinks superimposed in the snow.

Composition01

Preserve the large blue mass in the foreground

It must remain distinct from the Seine and maintain the visual weight which balances the houses located on the right.

Color02

Preserve the pink light of the opposite bank

This very pale heat gives full meaning to the contrast with the shaded snow and must not turn orange.

Matter03

Keep the boat as a little dark punctuation

Its discreet size locates the scale of the river and animates the transition between the foreground and the distance.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery documents Lavacourt under Snow, oil on canvas circa 1878-1881, 59.7 × 80.6 cm, signed and dated, NG3262 inventory and Wildenstein 511 catalog.

Dating01

A signature from 1881 for a perhaps earlier reason

The canvas is dated 1881, but the National Gallery estimates that it may have been painted during the exceptionally cold winter of 1879-1880.

Location02

Lavacourt seen from the bank of Vétheuil

Monet then lived on the other bank of the Seine. The village, the banks covered by snow and the frozen river provide several winter paintings.

Collection03

The legacy of Sir Hugh Lane

Hugh Lane purchased the painting from Durand-Ruel in 1905. His legacy from 1917 today explains the relationship between the National Gallery in London and the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 511 version
  • The snowy bank of Lavacourt
  • The pink light on the hillside
  • The little dark boat on the Seine
