A diagonal that sets everything in motion
The flail handle connects the lower body to the upper beam. The tool seems to extend the arms and enlarge the worker's movement.

Artwork description
Vincent van Gogh · September 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Standing in a barn, a peasant raises his flail before hitting the cereals spilled on the ground; Van Gogh concentrates the force of the movement in a network of blue, yellow and green verticals.
Look at the work
The drummer stands almost exactly in the center. His spread legs stabilize the body, while his arms and the handle of the flail draw a long diagonal up to the top of the canvas.
The barn frame forms a rigid rectangle behind it. Outside, a blue sky and a ladder introduce depth; on the ground, the yellow sheaves follow the direction of the gesture.
Van Gogh transposes here an engraving after Jean-François Millet belonging to Travaux des champs. It retains the very readable action of the model, then gives it new energy through color and material.
Composition, touch and color
The Van Gogh Museum lists the canvas under s0171V1962. Its format of 42 × 28 cm and the references F692/JH1784 allow it to be identified unambiguously.
The flail handle connects the lower body to the upper beam. The tool seems to extend the arms and enlarge the worker's movement.
The frontal posture makes the silhouette immediately understandable. Blue-green clothing stands out against the yellow straw and light walls.
Posts, lintel and barn opening form a stable structure around the action. The movement thus seems even more energetic.
Documented benchmarks
The official notice links this painting to the cycle of copies after Millet which allowed Van Gogh to study the figure when he worked without a model in Saint-Rémy.
The flail serves to separate the grains from the ears by repeated strikes; the chosen moment exactly precedes the impact.
Van Gogh transforms the printed image into a colorful painting, without trying to literally imitate the technique of engraving.
The small ladder visible on the left contributes to the depth and responds to the many straight lines of the barn.
Your reproduction
The copy must preserve the tension of the flail, the frontality of the figure, the blue-green of the garment and the yellows separated from the straw, without smoothing the contours.
