His black suit stands out against an almost bare brown background, while the light pants give all their rhythm to the pose. In 1864, Monet transposed the expressive liveliness of his first caricatures into painting and composed a portrait that was at once familiar, incisive and full of movement.

A relaxed pose reveals the character of the model better than an official decor

The doctor occupies an armchair with curved arms, placed slightly to the right of the center. His left leg projects towards the viewer and his black shoe cuts the large ocher area of the ground. This advance gives depth to a deliberately bare space.

The face is constructed with beige, gray and brown passages, reinforced by glasses and black hair. The raised hand, the cigar and the crossed legs form three distinct gestures which animate the silhouette. Monet's orange signature and date 64 respond discreetly to the warm tones of the background.

Without medical attributes or solemn staging, Monet makes the doctor recognized by his appearance, his gestures and the slightly theatrical assurance of his pose.

Michel Monet, son of the artist, identified the model as Dr. Leclenché. The portrait shows this in a private attitude rather than in the official presentation of a professional.

Monet still at the beginning of his portraiture practice

The museum emphasizes that Monet then developed his skills as a figure painter. This work from 1864 precedes the large portraits and open-air scenes which occupied it in the mid-1860s.

Collection03

A donation entered the Met in 1951

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Vogel donated the painting to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1951. It is today owned by the Department of European Paintings under number 51.32.
