À propos de l’œuvre

Dr. Leclenché, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Informal portrait of his doctor · Metropolitan Museum of Art

Dr Leclenché W43hand painted reproduction

Sitting sideways in an armchair, Dr. Leclenché crosses his legs, raises one hand towards his collar and carelessly holds a cigar in the other. His black suit stands out against an almost bare brown background, while the light pants give all their rhythm to the pose. In 1864, Monet transposed the expressive liveliness of his first caricatures into painting and composed a portrait that was at once familiar, incisive and full of movement.

Look at the work

A relaxed pose reveals the character of the model better than an official decor

The doctor occupies an armchair with curved arms, placed slightly to the right of the center. His left leg projects towards the viewer and his black shoe cuts the large ocher area of the ground. This advance gives depth to a deliberately bare space.

The face is constructed with beige, gray and brown passages, reinforced by glasses and black hair. The raised hand, the cigar and the crossed legs form three distinct gestures which animate the silhouette. Monet's orange signature and date 64 respond discreetly to the warm tones of the background.

Without medical attributes or solemn staging, Monet makes the doctor recognized by his appearance, his gestures and the slightly theatrical assurance of his pose.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A body diagonal that animates the small format

The head, raised arm and projected leg form a downward movement. The armchair frames this diagonal and prevents the dark silhouette from merging with the brown background.

02

The contrast of the suit and pants structures the figure

The black jacket concentrates the torso and arms, while the beige pants clearly separate the legs. A few blue and brown highlights in the blacks maintain the volumes.

03

The memory of youthful caricatures

The Met brings the slightly exaggerated gestures closer to the caricaturist activity practiced by Monet in Le Havre. The artist does not distort the model, but accentuates his relaxation and his temperament.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Dr. Leclenché from 1864, kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under inventory 51.32 and cataloged Wildenstein 43. The open image of the Met has been converted into a real WebP of 2,142 × 3,000 px.

Composition01

The blacks in the costume remain colorful

Blue, brown and gray differentiate lapels, sleeves and vest. A uniform black would remove creases and separation between the body and the chair.

Color02

The face concentrates the finest contrasts

Glasses, mustache, cheek shadows and forehead light are installed with economy. Their accuracy gives the resemblance without smoothing the touch.

Matter03

The brown background is nuanced from wall to floor

The upper part is darker and more matte, the floor more ocher and luminous. This difference is enough to sit the armchair without adding decoration.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1864, this oil on canvas measures 45.7 × 32.4 cm. It is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under inventory 51.32 and bears the number Wildenstein 43.

Identity01

Claude Monet's doctor

Michel Monet, son of the artist, identified the model as Dr. Leclenché. The portrait shows this in a private attitude rather than in the official presentation of a professional.

Period02

Monet still at the beginning of his portraiture practice

The museum emphasizes that Monet then developed his skills as a figure painter. This work from 1864 precedes the large portraits and open-air scenes which occupied it in the mid-1860s.

Collection03

A donation entered the Met in 1951

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Vogel donated the painting to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1951. It is today owned by the Department of European Paintings under number 51.32.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the sharp inclination of the seated pose.
  • Preserve shades in the black suit.
  • Keep gestures readable without stiffening your hands.
  • Differentiate the dark wall from the ocher floor.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This portrait is suitable for a desk, bookcase or entrance. A weathered black, walnut or dark gold frame accompanies its sobriety; a warm beige, deep green or taupe gray wall reveals the light pants and signature.
