A clear road descends then turns between the orchards before reaching La Roche-Guyon, whose pale houses group together at the foot of the cliff. A gnarled tree stands on the right, while the valley opens very far to the left under a greenish blue sky. Signed and dated 1880, this 60.5 × 73 cm oil on canvas is kept at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo under the number P.1959-0156 and corresponds to Wildenstein 582.

Look at the work

The road connects the foreground to the cliffs in a succession of curves and colorful touches

The path enters from below, slides towards the center then goes up slightly towards the village. Its pink, blue, green and ocher bands avoid any rigid lines. The perspective depends on its gradual narrowing and the trees that come closer around it.

On the right, the cliff and the houses form a compact vertical mass. On the left, the valley dissolves into very light blues and mauves. This asymmetry contrasts rocky proximity with atmospheric distance and gives the road its connecting function.

Monet does not describe a route by a precise drawing: he makes the slope, the turn and the distance felt by the color temperature and the rhythm of the key.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

A village located downstream from Vétheuil

Monet then lived in Vétheuil. La Roche-Guyon is located a little further down the Seine and offered him roads, cliffs and valley views different from the landscapes directly observed from his house.

A palette that has become brighter again

The museum points out that at the beginning of the 1880s, after the icy landscapes of 1879 -1880, Monet gradually found a clearer atmosphere and further freed his brushstrokes.

A view completed by a reverse shot

From a nearby location, Monet created another painting facing in the opposite direction, towards Vétheuil, now kept at the Phillips Collection in Washington.

The road should not become a simple perspective triangle. Its successive inflections create the visual walk that leads from the lower edge to the village.

Preserve the difference between cliff and valley

The right is denser and warmer; the left, paler and colder. This opposition builds depth without strong contours.

Matter03

Keep the tree straight as a vertical marker

Its dark trunk and thin branches stand out against the rock. It stabilizes the composition but must remain light so as not to close the passage towards the distance.

The village is recognizable by its narrow location under the escarpment. Monet transforms this spectacular topography into a calm path rather than a monumental panorama.
