À propos de l’œuvre

La plaine d'Auvers, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The Auvers PlainReproduction of oil painting on canvas

In a format twice as wide as it is tall, yellow fields, blue furrows, red flowers and millstones extend under a band of turquoise sky. Van Gogh transforms the Auvers plain into a colorful frieze.

Look at the work

A campaign deployed like a panorama

In the foreground, a carpet of green foliage mixed with red, white and blue flowers extends between two millstones. A brown and turquoise furrow then cuts the composition over its entire width.

The yellow and green plots rise towards a very high horizon line. A few spaced trees, an isolated building and thin paths are enough to give scale. The sky, reduced to a blue band, leaves almost all the room for crops.

The eye encounters no single center: it circulates laterally from millstone to tree, from field to bouquet, as if in front of an endless landscape.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Work 1007 can be recognized by its double square format, the two millstones in the foreground, the central furrow and the row of trees on the horizon.

01

A frieze format

The unusual width requires reading the painting from left to right. Van Gogh distributes red, brown and blue accents to maintain this course.

02

The sky deliberately reduced

The horizon line is placed very high. The plain therefore occupies most of the surface and becomes the real subject of the painting.

03

Cultures drawn by the touch

Each plot receives a different direction: curves, vertical hatching or horizontal lines describe the variety of the land.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Belvedere preserves La Plaine d'Auvers under number 1007. Painted in June 1890 on linen canvas, it measures 50 × 101 cm and bears the references F775 and JH2038.

Format

A double panoramic square

With a ratio close to two to one, the canvas belongs to the very elongated formats experienced by Van Gogh during his last weeks in Auvers.

Construction

Overlay strips

Flowers, millstones, furrows, fields and sky form successive horizontal zones. However, the curves of the crops prevent any rigidity.

Collection

Inventory 1007

The painting is kept at the Belvedere in Vienna, where it bears the number 1007. It is neither dated nor signed on the canvas.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the panoramic relationship, the succession of fields and the small floral accents which prevent the large bands from becoming uniform.

  • The two grinding wheels placed at the ends of the foreground
  • The brown and turquoise furrow that crosses the width
  • Red, white and blue flowers in the vegetation
  • Trees spaced on the very high horizon
