À propos de l’œuvre

L'Enfant à l'orange, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The Orange ChildReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A little girl with blond hair holds a round orange in both hands. Van Gogh places the figure in front of a green background covered with yellow and white touches; the fruit, the light blue jacket and the lilac skirt are enough to give the portrait its freshness.

Look at the work

An orange fruit in the center of a child's portrait

The child is seen almost from the front, his chest slightly turned. Her blue eyes look at the viewer, while her rosy cheeks and her little smile liven up a very light face. Blonde hair spreads in soft strands on the right shoulder.

Hands frame orange in the center of the canvas. The turquoise blue jacket opens onto a white bib; the lilac blue skirt is covered with darker dashes. Behind, the vertical touches of the background evoke luminous vegetation without specifying the location.

The simple shape of the fruit connects the hands, face and complementary colors of the garment and background.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F785 work can be recognized by its almost square format, the orange held with both hands, the light blue jacket and the pale green background strewn with touches of yellow.

01

Orange as anchor

The fruit is placed near the geometric center. Its warm color immediately catches the eye and responds to the roses of the cheeks as well as the golden locks.

02

A model in small touches

The face is not smoothed: greens, pinks, yellows and grays remain visible. These colorful touches build volume while maintaining the liveliness of the surface.

03

A deliberately open bottom

Vertical and curved signs suggest herbs and flowers without forming a descriptive decoration. The light silhouette can thus stand out without losing its connection with nature.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

L'Enfant à l'orange is a 50 × 51 cm oil on canvas painted in Auvers in June 1890. Preserved in Switzerland in a private collection, it is cataloged F785 and JH2057.

Model

An undocumented identity

The child's name is not established by a reference source. The sheet therefore sticks to the historical title and the visible elements of the portrait.

Color

Blue and orange in addition

The warm fruit opposes the blue jacket. Van Gogh uses this very readable contrast without hardening the child's soft expression.

Catalog

F785 · JH2057

These references distinguish this portrait of the Two Children of the Musée d'Orsay and portraits of Adeline Ravoux executed at the same time.

  • Round orange held in both hands
  • The turquoise jacket and the white bib
  • The green background covered with yellow and light touches
