À propos de l’œuvre

Bord de mer à Sainte-Adresse, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A storm on the Normandy coast · Former Rockefeller collection

Seaside in Sainte-Adresse W113hand painted reproduction

Heavy seas hit the pebbles at the foot of a dark promontory. At the very top, a tiny lighthouse measures the scale of the landscape while clouds occupy most of the canvas. Monet does not seek here the gentleness of a seaside resort: he builds a tense navy, dominated by wind, foam and cold light.

Look at the work

The coast is divided between foam, sky and cape mass

The shoreline starts from the lower right corner and leads to the left horizon. The waves arrive at an angle, break into white bands then retreat among the pebbles. This diagonal gives the viewer the feeling of being placed very low, almost at water level.

The promontory closes the right edge with brown, green and black earth. At its summit, the lighthouse and some buildings are reduced to small vertical signs. Above, layers of gray, blue and white follow one another without forming a uniform ceiling.

The lighthouse is almost imperceptible: faced with the scale of the sky and the surf, human presence becomes a simple measure of the landscape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal of waves to enter the image

The light rollers follow one another from the foreground to the left. Their inclination avoids a static superposition of horizontal bands.

02

A sky painted in superimposed masses

Whites are never pure: they mix with grays, blues and a few cream tones. This variety gives weight to the clouds and lets light circulate.

03

The cape as a dark counterweight

The cliff occupies relatively little surface area, but its concentrated browns balance the entire sky. The small lighthouse must remain readable without becoming an independent subject.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the Wildenstein 113 version presented by Christie's. The 3200 × 2120 px file was reduced to 3000 × 1988 px, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP for zoom.

Composition01

Foam does not form a continuous ribbon

White, gray and cream touches fragment on contact with the stones. Interruptions are essential to the movement of the surf.

Color02

The horizon remains low

The sky occupies almost two thirds of the height. Reducing this proportion would cause the landscape to lose its meteorological magnitude.

Matter03

The signature is placed at the bottom right

It remains discreet among the pebbles and shadows of the shore, without competing with the wave lines.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1868, this oil on canvas measuring 43.5 × 65.4 cm is identified as Wildenstein 113. Signed lower right, it now belongs to a private collection.

Location01

Sainte-Adresse, near Le Havre

Monet knows this part of the Normandy coast intimately. In 1867 and 1868, he observed elegant leisure activities there but also the rapid changes in the sky and the sea.

Provenance02

A work from the Rockefeller collection

The painting belonged to Peggy and David Rockefeller before its sale at Christie's in 2018. This provenance explains the particularly precise documentation of its dimensions and history.

Painting03

Energetic treatment of bad weather

The thick touches of foam, dark pebbles and discontinuous clouds give immediate materiality to the coast. The painting already shows how Monet makes the atmosphere the true subject of the landscape.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the vast cloudy sky and horizon very low.
  • Build waves in fragmented diagonals.
  • Keep the promontory dark on the right edge.
  • Keep the lighthouse tiny but identifiable.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This navy with bluish grays is suitable for a living room, office or library. A weathered black, stone gray or dark wood frame supports the contrast of the cape; a light oak frame brings a more contemporary reading.
