From a grassy bank, Monet watches the Seine widen into a large blue curve in front of the slopes of Vétheuil. Two willows with silver foliage occupy the foreground and bend in the wind, while the light softens the pink and green hills on the other bank. Signed Claude Monet lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 58.4 × 78.7 cm was painted in 1881, belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 675.

A windswept bank facing the wide bend of the Seine

The river crosses the center from left to right and leads towards distant hillsides. In the foreground, green grass descends towards the water; two light willows form a turbulent mass which partially masks the opposite bank and brings the viewer closer to the landscape.

The Seine changes from deep blue to turquoise and purple. The trees are built with touches of white, sage green and gray blue, with darker shadows under the branches. The sky takes up almost half the size and diffuses pinks, pale yellows and light blues.

The painting not only fixes a place: it makes a specific day sensitive, when the wind lifts the willows and the sun saturates the water, grass and hillsides at the same time.

A depth organized by three bands

Grass and trees in the foreground, river in the center, hillsides and sky in the background build a clear space. However, the willows overflow these divisions and connect the shore to the distant landscape.

The branches are not drawn separately. Oblique and short touches give the impression of foliage turned over by the wind and catch the light on its silver faces.

A light that unites the entire valley

Blue, pink, green and yellow flow from the sky towards the hills, then into the water and grass. This repetition creates a continuous atmosphere rather than a juxtaposition of planes.

Keep the hills low under very open skies

The horizon is placed low so that light dominates the scene. Raising the hillsides or darkening the sky would modify the peaceful balance of the composition.

The landscape which is gradually replacing urban life

Installed in the village from 1878 to 1881, Monet abandoned the suburban leisure activities of Argenteuil and the Parisian streets to explore the valley, its seasons and the changing effects of light on the Seine.

The boat as a mobile workshop on the river

The Christie's notice reminds us that Monet often takes his boat to work. It can thus vary the views of the banks, the curve of the river and the hillsides of Lavacourt.

Provenance03

A work that remained out of public view for a long time

Known in New York since 1905, the painting was loaned to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1917 to 1923 then exhibited in 1927. Kept in the same family since around 1958, it reappeared on sale in 2023.
