Claude Monet · Étretat · 1883 · W827a

Wave effect at Étretat W827ahand painted reproduction

A green and blue sea hits the cliff of Étretat in sheaves of foam, under a sky laden with rapid clouds. This oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm, painted in 1883, is kept at the Matsuoka Museum of Art in Tokyo and corresponds to Wildenstein 827a.

Look at the work

The wave connects the movement of the sea to the verticality of the cliff

The sea occupies almost two thirds of the canvas and progresses diagonally towards the rocks. The cliff, cut by the right edge, forms a warm wall facing the cold expanse of water.

The white ridges are laid in long touches that follow the course of the waves. Cobalt blue, turquoise and emerald green circulate under the foam, while pink, ocher and purple shape the chalk.

W827a does not freeze an isolated wave: the brush directions make you feel a continuous succession of assaults against the coast.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A composition taken between sea and wall

The horizon remains low and the cliff enters abruptly from the right. This framing brings the viewer closer to the area where the water breaks.

02

Waves built by trajectories

The white touches do not decorate the surface at random: they bend, cross and converge towards the impact against the rocks.

03

The Norman campaign of 1883

The Matsuoka Museum presents this painting among Monet's research on immediate perception. Étretat offers cliffs, wind and changing sea as closely linked motifs.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The sheet uses a single image. The best available file is kept in real WebP of 1024 × 822 px, at its source resolution and without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A cliff truncated by the frame

The rock mass continues out of field. Its cutting reinforces proximity and should not be compensated by adding space.

Color02

A colorful foam

Whites contain blue, pink and green. Pure, uniform white would make waves flat and detached from the sea.

Matter03

Loose gestures in the water

The horizontal passages of the open sea become more curved and thick near the cliff, reflecting the acceleration and surf.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Matsuoka Museum of Art preserves Effect of Waves in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1883, 60 × 73 cm and Wildenstein 827a.

Location01

The Etretat Coast

Monet has known Normandy since his youth in Le Havre. In 1883, he returned to confront his painting with chalk cliffs and a particularly mobile sea.

Technique02

The split key

The museum explains how the Impressionists juxtaposed poorly mixed colors to restore changes in light and movement.

Version03

The W827a canvas from Tokyo

The 60 × 73 cm format and the Wildenstein reference 827a precisely identify this image among the numerous views of Étretat.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 827a version
  • The hot cliff cut to the right
  • The green and blue waves facing the rocks
  • White foam crossed with colors
