À propos de l’œuvre

Effet de neige à Vétheuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Winter 1878 -1879 in Vétheuil · Musée d'Orsay

Snow effect in Vétheuil W506hand painted reproduction

The church of Vétheuil dominates a village almost absorbed by the snowy sky. In front of the houses, a dark hedge, a small gate and a blue figure form a clear boundary; the terrain in the foreground alternates white patches, damp earth and cold reflections. Monet therefore does not paint uniform snow, but a landscape where each surface reacts differently to thaw, shadow and light.

Look at the work

Snow reveals both the earth and the light

The village occupies a stepped strip above the hedge. The bell tower is placed slightly to the left of the center, surrounded by roofs which descend to the right. Leafless trees cross the facades and the sky; their thin branches deliberately blur the separation between architecture and atmosphere.

The lower half initially appears almost empty, but it is covered with horizontal touches of white, green, brown and blue-gray. Areas of open ground interrupt the snow. Near the gate, a small blue silhouette brings the only human accent and measures the depth between the land and the houses.

Winter does not erase the landscape: it reveals a mosaic of snow, earth and humidity that the touch immediately makes sensitive.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A village placed above a large foreground

The mass of houses remains concentrated in the upper half. The irregular extent of the ground causes the hedge to recede and gives the bell tower a distant presence.

02

White people who are never neutral

Cream, gray blue, pale pink and cool green mingle in the snow. The lighter areas are surrounded by damp browns which enhance their brightness.

03

A web of fragile verticals

Trunks, branches, gate and bell tower rise through horizontal keys. This crossing maintains the construction of the village without freezing the shapes.

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the RF 3755 inventory of the Musée d'Orsay. The best available plane view measures 1,056 × 803 px; it is kept at its native definition, without enlargement, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

A bell tower partially veiled by trees

The dark summit remains the main landmark, but several branches cut the outline. This superposition creates a precise atmospheric depth.

Color02

Snow covered in terrestrial colors

White doesn't cover everything. Browns, greens and blues appear between the light patches and make the surface cold, damp and uneven.

Matter03

A touch oriented according to the patterns

The branches are fast and vertical, the facades more compact, the ground makes horizontal gestures. Their opposition allows each depth to be read.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas of 52.5 × 71 cm, painted during the winter of 1878 -1879, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 3755 and classified Wildenstein 506.

Purchase01

Acquired by Gustave Caillebotte in January 1879

Caillebotte bought the painting directly from Monet for 200 francs. It remained in his collection until his death and was part of the major legacy intended for the French state.

Exposure02

Presented from the fourth impressionist exhibition

A few months after its performance, the work appeared under number 144 at the exhibition organized on Avenue de l'Opéra, from April 10 to May 11, 1879.

Course03

From Luxembourg to the Musée d'Orsay

Accepted by the State in 1896, it was first attributed to the Luxembourg Museum, then moved to the Louvre and the Jeu de Paume before joining the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the significant proportion of snow-covered land in front of the village.
  • Vary each white with blue grays, creams and small pink notes.
  • Maintain the blue silhouette and the grid as discreet landmarks near the hedge.
  • Keep the thin branches in front of the bell tower without hardening their design.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its broken whites, blue grays and natural browns bring calm light to a living room, bedroom or office. A light oak, warm gray or aged silver frame accompanies the winter landscape with discretion.
