Two young women dressed in white slide across the Epte in a long pink boat, above aquatic grasses that the light ripples beneath the surface. This large oil on canvas measuring 135.3 × 176.5 cm, painted in 1890, is kept at the Pola Museum under number 006-0487 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1249.

Look at the work

A clear boat crosses deep, almost vegetal water

The hull cuts the painting in a long pink and red diagonal. On the right, the oar descends to the lower edge; the two figures, placed above this line, remain the only frankly pale areas in the middle of a surface dominated by greens.

Monet does not clearly separate reflection, depth and shore. Dark ribbons suggest plants underwater, while lighter touches indicate light on the surface. The movement of the oar connects the stable world of the boat to this changing water.

W1249 makes the Epte a space without a fixed outline: the boat remains readable, but the water mixes reflections, submerged vegetation and depth in the same pictorial material.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal that holds the whole scene together

The hull enters from the left and exits to the right, slightly rising. It gives direction to the gaze and stabilizes the large body of water, whose curved keys might otherwise appear devoid of orientation.

02

Two figures treated as foci of light

Dresses and hats are not drawn by a continuous dark outline. Their pinkish, bluish and gray whites stand out in contrast of value against the deep greens of the bank and the river.

03

The monumental version of the Pola Museum

Its dimensions of 135.3 × 176.5 cm, inventory 006-0487 and reference Wildenstein 1249 distinguish this pink boat from the other canoeing scenes painted by Monet on the Epte.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one reference image is used. The exact official image of W1249 is provided in real WebP of 1500 × 1141 px, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The exact placement of the train

The oar forms the second large diagonal and crosses the water to the foreground. Its angle, length and warm orange are essential to the balance of the composition.

Color02

Roses versus greens

The pink of the shell and clothing takes on its intensity upon contact with bluish greens, olives and almost blacks. Too uniform reproduction would lose this complementary opposition.

Matter03

A different touch for each depth

The foliage receives tight touches, the hull more continuous passages and the water superimposed sinuous lines. These rhythms must remain distinct to make the surface readable.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Pola Museum documents The Pink Boat, oil on canvas from 1890, 135.3 × 176.5 cm, inventory 006-0487 and reference Wildenstein 1249.

Series01

Canoeing on the Epte

In the late 1880s and 1890s, Monet painted several scenes related to the river that runs along his Giverny property. The figures are generally associated with Suzanne and Blanche Hoschedé.

Subject02

Water observed beneath its surface

The painting places as much importance on submerged plants and reflections as on passengers. This problem of transparency announces the research that Monet will continue in the water lily pond.

Collection03

A major work of the Pola Museum

The painting belongs to the Claude Monet ensemble of the Pola museum in Hakone. Its number 006-0487 allows the reproduced version to be unambiguously identified.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version 006-0487, Wildenstein 1249
  • The long pink shell that crosses the entire width
  • The two clear figures without hard contours
  • Submerged grasses visible through green water

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The large horizontal format is suitable for a living room or dining room. An off-white wall, dark wood and some forest green or powder pink textiles extend the palette without competing with the very present diagonal of the boat.
